About Rainbow Lake

Rainbow Lake sits tucked into the mountains near Frisco in Summit County, offering one of the most accessible and family-friendly hikes in the area. The roughly one-mile trail to the lake draws a steady crowd of families with young children, dog owners, and visitors looking for an easy outing with rewarding scenery. If you have an hour to spare and want a quick taste of alpine beauty near town, this is the spot.

The trail to Rainbow Lake begins from a small parking lot that fills up fast, especially on weekday afternoons and weekends. A portable toilet is available at the trailhead. The path starts on a wooden boardwalk section before transitioning to a dirt trail with moderate rock sections and exposed tree roots. While the terrain is mostly gentle with minimal elevation gain, a few rocky stretches require careful footing. Hiking poles can be helpful but are not essential. The trail is not stroller-friendly due to the uneven surfaces.

Several connecting trails branch off from the Rainbow Lake trailhead, including the Peak Trail, Mason Trail, and Hattie's Trail, allowing hikers to create loops or extend their outing. Mountain bikers also share the trail system, so stay alert on the path. The area offers views of Dillon Reservoir and the town of Frisco from higher vantage points along connecting routes like Mount Royal.

Moose sightings are common along the trail, particularly in fall and early winter. Mule deer have also been spotted near the lake. Visitors should give wildlife a wide berth and be prepared to adjust their route if animals are blocking the path. Dogs are welcome on leash, and the trail follows a pack-it-in, pack-it-out policy with no trash receptacles.

Fall is a standout season at Rainbow Lake, when golden aspen foliage lines the trail and creates postcard-worthy scenery. Winter hiking is also popular, though microspikes are recommended for snowy conditions. The lake itself is accessible for wading or a quick dip in summer, but the water is cold. Rainbow Lake works well as a cooldown hike after tackling a nearby fourteener or as an easy evening walk near sunset, when the light on the lake is especially scenic.

One of our favorite easy family hikes. The fall vs winter experience is pretty different, but both are enjoyable. We encountered some moose (Nov '25) along the trail that we gave a wide berth. They were majestic but also mildly terrifying. Very cool to see from a distance but ended up taking a different trail back to the road to give them adequate space. Every other time we've visited, it has been covered in snow. In snow, the hike is more pleasant with some micro spikes. In the fall normal hiking boots are sufficient. This isn't a difficult hike at all and is extremely accessible. Highly recommended!

My new favorite hike! This could not be more glorious. We went out on rainbow lake trail and came back on Mason and Hattie. We will definitely come again

Easy. 1 mile hike up and back, great for kids and dogs, parents and grandparents. There is some loose rock so you got to be careful but the views are beautiful. As of September 20th, there's lots of Fall foliage to see and appreciate!

Great trail to take the kids on. It's a 1.6 mile total hike (down and back), really not much elevation gain, and just enough variety to please everybody.

This was a pretty good hike! We ended up doing a longer hike than we anticipated, as the fastest way to the lake was a smaller trail and hard to see on the way up. Other than that, the hike was pretty mild and I could talk easily, since it was not very steep or hard. It's a fairly large trail system in that area, so you could choose to do a loop or an out-and-back.
