About Pass Lake

Pass Lake rests just below the Continental Divide at 11,834 feet, about half a mile south of the Loveland Pass summit on U.S. Highway 6 in Summit County. The drive up from either Silverthorne or the I-70 corridor takes roughly 20 minutes, yet the scene at the top feels worlds away from the highway: wind-swept alpine tundra, rugged peaks in every direction, and a small, reflective lake that sits in quiet contrast to the exposed ridgeline above it. If you have ever wanted an alpine lake experience without a long approach hike, Pass Lake is one of the most accessible options along the Front Range.

The Loveland Lakes Trail begins on the southeastern shore of Pass Lake and loops roughly 0.8 miles around the water and neighboring Lake Kaz with only about 85 feet of elevation gain. The path is manageable for families with children and takes most visitors 30 to 60 minutes to complete. Wildflowers carpet the tundra from late June through August, and the panoramic views of the surrounding peaks make the short walk feel far more rewarding than the distance suggests. Several free benches and picnic tables near the parking area provide rest spots for those who prefer to sit and take in the scenery.

Pass Lake has quietly earned a reputation as one of Colorado's most photogenic elopement and intimate wedding locations. Multiple photographers and couples in recent reviews describe the combination of mountain drama and relative privacy as ideal for small ceremonies. Even on busy weekends, the area around the lake tends to stay calmer than nearby ski resort towns.

Wildlife viewing is a real draw at this elevation. Marmots and pikas live among the boulders near the shore, and mountain goats are regularly spotted on the surrounding slopes. Birders may catch white-tailed ptarmigan, horned larks, and American pipits in the alpine scrub. The lake itself holds some trout, though fishing reports are mixed and the cold, high-altitude water limits productivity.

Pass Lake is best visited between late June and early October, when the road is reliably clear and the tundra is green. Winter access is possible since Highway 6 stays open year-round, but heavy snow and brutal wind make lakeside visits brief. Snowshoeing along the ridge above the lake is an option for cold-weather explorers. No fees or permits are required. Pack layers regardless of the season, because temperatures at nearly 12,000 feet can drop fast, and afternoon storms build without much warning.

As an elopement photographer, I love sharing Pass Lake with couples seeking dramatic mountain views, an alpine lake, and/or a bit of privacy. Despite the easy accessibility and beauty of this location it stays relatively uncrowded, making it a wonderful location to celebrate your intimate wedding day!

It’s a relatively easy hike, but it rewards you with incredible views around Pass Lake. With the White River National Forest that includes Loveland, Vail, and Crooked Creek Pass, this area showcases some of Colorado’s most stunning scenery.

My wife and I picked this location for our summer elopement from a list of options offered by our elopement coordinator. We are so glad this is what we chose! The site felt very private (even though it is a public park) and the feeling of being surrounded by mountains in all directions was absolutely incredible. We hope to make this an anniversary trip every few years!

It's a great place to take a break at while driving over Loveland pass, lots of awesome views. Hiking up the hills near the lake gets you even more awesome views. The parking isn't huge but I haven't seen this place yet completely packed yet.

I've been coming to Loveland Pass for many years and somehow I never bothered to stop here! This year my daughter noticed we were passing a late on the GPS and drew our attention to this little oasis. I'm so glad she did.
