About Lower Mohawk Lake

Lower Mohawk Lake is a pristine alpine lake in Summit County, Colorado, reached by a rewarding and moderately challenging hike through one of the most scenic valleys near Breckenridge. With wildflower-covered meadows, waterfalls, historic mining ruins, and the crystal-clear lake itself as the payoff, this trail consistently ranks among the best day hikes in the area. The 4.9-star rating from visitors tells the story: almost everyone who makes the climb considers it worth every step.

Hiking to Lower Mohawk Lake is roughly six miles round trip from the Spruce Creek Trailhead, with approximately 1,800 feet of elevation gain. The trail climbs steadily through forested terrain before opening into alpine meadows, with the final half-mile to the lake being the steepest section at around 800 feet of gain with switchbacks. The trail can be tricky to follow in spots, as signage is limited and some hikers report confusion about the route. Keep heading uphill and you will find your way. The hike takes most groups three to four hours round trip, though families with children should plan for longer with water and photo breaks.

The trail passes abandoned mining equipment and dilapidated historic cabins from the area's mining era, adding a unique cultural element to the hike. Waterfalls along the route provide natural rest stops and photo opportunities. Wildflowers blanket the meadows during peak summer, typically July. The lake itself sits in an alpine basin with stunning views of the surrounding peaks and the valley below.

Trailhead parking fills early on summer weekends, especially around holidays. The main Spruce Creek Trailhead parking lot can be full by 7:30 AM on busy Saturdays, with overflow vehicles lining the road. A second parking area about 1.5 miles up a rough four-wheel-drive road provides additional access, but the road requires high-clearance four-wheel-drive and is not passable in standard vehicles. Starting early is the single best piece of advice for this hike.

Snow can cover portions of the trail well into June, and the steep final section near the lake can be icy and challenging in early season. Bring layers, plenty of water, bug spray, and snacks. The high elevation makes this hike physically demanding, particularly for visitors not acclimatized to altitude. For those with energy to spare, the trail continues from Lower Mohawk Lake up a steep climb to Upper Mohawk Lake, which fellow hikers describe as even more stunning.

Beautiful hike, rewarding views, peaceful pristine alpine lake, and shady trees... what more could you want? The falls & historic mining structures in the way up are breathtaking and fascinating.

Terrific views as a reward for a challenging but doable hike

Was first week of June and the snow was still on most of the trail after the road, but it was packed fairly well. This is a steady uphill hike (~1800 feet), especially at the end when the last half mile to Lower Mohawk was 800 feet in half a mile. Brutal, but well worth it of the valley below. There was still too much snow to head up to Upper, but it is on my list for the next time!

Beautiful day hiking, but strenuous for flatlanders. Bring bug spray, water and a snack.

It’s such a beautiful trail! We got to the spruce creek trailhead about 7:35am on Saturday 7/3, parking lot was full and lots of cars already parked on the sides of the road. We drove in about additional 1.5 mile with our Jeep, we took the only spot left in the 2nd parking lot and started to hike in. We also saw cars parked along the sides of the trail too. We had 2 kids with us, took lots of water breaks and picture breaks. Wildflowers were all over, the water falls and lower Mohawk Lake were beautiful, well worth it!

Great hiking trail to enjoy some literally breathtaking views. Took us a bit close to 4 hours to get to this point with parts of the trail having snow covered our entire legs (up to torso). Waiting to aclimate to heights might be best, but if don’t have the time just plan for a slower and physically intense hike.
