About Grays Lake

Grays Lake is a high-alpine lake perched along the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway in Summit County, Colorado. Sitting at roughly 12,000 feet in elevation among some of the most dramatic scenery along the Front Range, this glacially carved lake draws hikers, wildlife watchers, and sightseers who stop along the historic road to take in its stark alpine beauty. The surrounding tundra, wildflower meadows, and panoramic mountain views create a landscape that feels closer to the Arctic than to the Denver metro area just 60 miles to the east.

Access to Grays Lake comes via the Mount Blue Sky Road (formerly Mount Evans Road), a paved scenic byway that climbs from Idaho Springs through Arapaho National Forest to the summit at over 14,000 feet. The road is typically open from Memorial Day through mid-September, and a day-use fee is required for vehicles entering the byway. Grays Lake sits roughly at the midpoint, making it a natural rest stop for visitors heading to or from the summit. The Chicago Lakes Overlook trailhead is nearby, offering additional hiking opportunities for those looking to extend their visit.

The lake itself is a small, scenic tarn surrounded by alpine tundra, exposed rock, and sweeping mountain ridgelines. Wildflowers bloom across the surrounding meadows in July and August, and mountain goats, bighorn sheep, marmots, and pikas are commonly spotted in the area. The setting is ideal for photography, especially during the golden hours when sunlight plays across the peaks and reflects off the water.

Visitors should prepare for rapidly changing weather at this elevation. Temperatures can drop suddenly, wind picks up without warning, and afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. There is no cell service in the area, so plan accordingly and bring layers, water, and a full tank of gas. The alpine tundra is extremely fragile, so stay on established trails and roads to protect the vegetation.

Grays Lake is not a fishing or swimming destination. Its primary appeal is its raw alpine scenery and the ease of access from a paved road. For anyone driving the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway, a stop at Grays Lake provides one of the most accessible high-altitude lake experiences in Colorado without requiring a strenuous hike.

One of the most beautiful places to visit in Colorado definitely love the trip it is quite a drive and there's no signal up there so be careful when you go up there know your way around and have a way to get back down the mountain

Jest mniej więcej w połowie drogi Mt Blue Sky. Koniecznie trzeba się zatrzymać , pójść też na punkt widokowy Chicago Lake. My niestety mieliśmy pecha, bo pogoda diametralnie się zmieniła, wiało i padało. Zatrzymaliśmy się na krótko i pojechaliśmy dalej.
