About Sawmill Reservoir

Sawmill Reservoir is a ten-acre alpine lake perched at nearly 10,000 feet of elevation just above the town of Breckenridge in Summit County. Surrounded by dense spruce and pine forest with glimpses of the Breckenridge Ski Resort slopes through the trees, this small reservoir delivers big mountain scenery on a short, family-friendly trail that almost anyone can handle, regardless of fitness level or hiking experience.

The most popular route to Sawmill Reservoir begins at the Snowflake Trailhead on 4 O'Clock Road. The trail covers roughly 1.2 miles with about 236 feet of elevation gain, making it an easy hike that typically takes thirty minutes to an hour. The path is clearly marked and well-maintained, passing through shaded forest before opening up at the reservoir shoreline. A loop trail of about 1.3 miles circles the water, giving visitors multiple angles on the surrounding peaks and a chance to find a quiet spot along the bank. For visitors not yet acclimated to high altitude, this gentle route is an ideal first-day hike in the Breckenridge area.

Fishing at Sawmill Reservoir is permitted from shore or by wading, and the lake holds populations of trout that attract anglers throughout the open-water season. The reservoir is small enough that shore fishing reaches productive water from almost any point along the bank. A valid Colorado fishing license is required.

One of the standout features of the Sawmill Reservoir trail is the creek section below the dam. A short stairway leads down to a trail along a mountain stream with small waterfalls cascading through the rocks. Many hikers consider this stretch the highlight of the entire outing, and it adds minimal distance to the overall loop. The area near the creek is also heavily shaded, making it a cool retreat on warm summer afternoons.

Families with young children will find the Fairy Forest scattered near the reservoir especially appealing. Miniature fairy houses are hidden among the trees and rocks, turning the hike into a scavenger hunt that keeps kids engaged and moving along the trail. Strollers can navigate the main path with some effort, though a few rocky sections may require lifting.

Wildlife sightings add another layer to a visit. Moose are spotted regularly near the reservoir and along the creek, sometimes standing on the sandbar in the middle of the water. Maintain a safe distance if you encounter one. The trail is also a popular location for photography sessions and even elopement ceremonies, thanks to the combination of mountain backdrop and easy access from town.

Sawmill Reservoir is open year-round, though winter conditions may require snowshoes or microspikes. Parking near the trailhead is extremely limited, so arriving early or walking from town is recommended during peak season.

Great hike for people not acclimated to the altitude. Beautiful small lake with fishing and maybe a moose grazing.

The walk around the reservoir is lovely, but the real star is the creek with waterfalls, a short flight of stairs from the top.
