The trail covers roughly 1.2 miles with about 236 feet of elevation gain, making it an easy hike that typically takes thirty minutes to an hour. The path is clearly marked and well-maintained, passing through shaded forest before opening up at the reservoir shoreline. A loop trail of about 1.3 miles circles the water, giving visitors multiple angles on the surrounding peaks and a chance to find a quiet spot along the bank. For visitors not yet acclimated to high altitude, this gentle route is an ideal first-day hike in the Breckenridge area.
Fishing at Sawmill Reservoir is permitted from shore or by wading, and the lake holds populations of trout that attract anglers throughout the open-water season.
