About Officers Gulch Pond

Officers Gulch Pond is a small, strikingly scenic lake tucked right alongside Interstate 70 between Copper Mountain and Frisco in Summit County. Despite its proximity to one of Colorado's busiest mountain corridors, the pond feels surprisingly peaceful and serves as an ideal quick stop for travelers heading to or from the Vail and Breckenridge areas. A one-mile trail loops around the entire pond, making it one of the most accessible alpine lake experiences in Summit County.

The trail around Officers Gulch Pond is mostly flat and family-friendly, though the second half of the loop (heading clockwise) can get muddy and features some slanted ground with loose rocks. Hiking boots are recommended over casual shoes, especially after rain. The walk takes about 30 to 40 minutes at a relaxed pace, and the views throughout are exceptional, with mountain peaks framing the water on all sides. There is a small parking area near the trailhead, and additional street parking is available along the road. Restrooms are located across I-70 off a nearby bike trail.

Fishing is one of the main draws at Officers Gulch Pond. The lake is stocked with tiger trout, a hybrid species that attracts anglers year-round. Paddlers frequent the pond for kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddleboarding, and the calm, sheltered water makes it well suited for beginners. Dogs are welcome and visitors regularly let them swim in the pond, though dog waste along the trail has been noted as an issue, so bringing bags is appreciated.

The pond has become a popular location for small weddings, elopements, and photography sessions, particularly during sunrise, sunset, and the off-season when crowds thin out. Peak summer weekends can draw larger crowds, but weekday visits offer a quieter experience. The scenery is often described as some of the most beautiful along the entire I-70 corridor. A bridge area and stream near the trailhead add visual interest. The site formerly operated as a campground but no longer offers camping. For anyone driving through Summit County, Officers Gulch Pond is a worthwhile 30-minute detour that punches well above its weight in scenery and accessibility.

Beautiful pond with a one mile hiking trail. Stocked with Tiger trout (hybrid). Lots of dog poop😑 along the trail.

We stopped here on our way back from the Vail area driving back toward Keystone. This was worth the stop! Restrooms are located across I-70 off a bike trail. The parking here was small, but the walk to the Gulch was short. You can walk around the lake. The trail isn't hard, but there are parts that are hard to navigate as the ground is slanted or has loose rocks/dirt. It wasn't horrible, but be aware! There was a wedding happening on the other side of the lake, which drew a lot of people, but we were on the opposite side where it was quiet. Several people were kayaking or paddleboarding while we were there.

We pulled over here to let our dog swim on our way back from Hoosier Pass in Breckenridge. Absolutely beautiful!

Really scenic stop along the drive to Vail. We parked along the street and walked to the trail close to sunset.
