About Lower Cataract Lake

Lower Cataract Lake is a stunning alpine lake in Summit County, reached by the popular Lower Cataract Loop Trail in the Eagles Nest Wilderness area. Located a short drive from the resort towns of Frisco and Dillon, this lake has become one of the most beloved hiking destinations in the central Colorado mountains. The loop trail, the wildflower meadows, and the mountain waterfall visible from the path combine to create one of the most scenic and accessible alpine hikes on the I-70 corridor.

The Lower Cataract Loop Trail circles the lake in roughly 1.5 to 2 hours at a relaxed pace. Most hikers rate it as easy to moderate, though a rocky uphill section on the back half adds a bit of challenge. Walking the loop clockwise takes you through wildflower meadows along the lakeshore first, then into a pine forest with views of a large waterfall cascading down the mountainside, before finishing with the steeper section. Going counterclockwise reverses the order, getting the elevation gain done early. Either direction rewards you with outstanding views, and the trail is clearly defined the entire way.

The lake itself is open for wading and swimming on warm days, with several access points along the trail where the shore is easy to reach. Fishing is possible, though the lake sees heavy foot traffic during peak hours. The water is clear and cold, framed by evergreen forest and rocky mountain peaks that make every angle worth a photograph. Wildflowers bloom in force from late June through August, carpeting the meadows near the water in waves of purple, yellow, and white.

Families with older children will find the trail manageable, and the lake makes a natural lunch stop with flat rocks and grassy areas along the shore. The trailhead has a parking lot and vault toilets, though facilities can be strained on busy weekends. Arrive before 10 AM to secure a parking spot and enjoy the trail before the crowds hit — by 11 AM on summer weekends, the lot fills and the trail gets busy.

Lower Cataract Lake sits at high altitude in Summit County, so bring plenty of water and sunscreen even on mild days. Mosquitoes can be intense in early to mid-summer, so pack repellent. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August, making an early start even more important. The trail is typically accessible from late June through October, with peak wildflower season in July.

For visitors staying in Summit County who want a rewarding day hike with a picture-perfect alpine lake at the finish, Lower Cataract Lake consistently ranks among the best options within an easy drive of Frisco, Silverthorne, and Dillon.

.Beautiful trail and accurately described as easy, though there are a few short stretches that may be challenging for someone that truly requires a 100% easy trail.

Bathroom was at trailhead but was closed due to fresh paint. 1/4 mile other direction bathroom was open. We took the loop trail counter clockwise which was the hardest/steepest part of the trail but moderate/doable & gets easier. Highly recommend. Beautiful all around.

Lower Cataract Loop Trail: we’re from Texas so any altitude is an adjustment! This trail was easy breezy. We started this trail at around 9am and the parking lot was empty!! Apparently 11am and on is when it gets VERY packed. We had the entire trail to ourselves for a while. We stopped and took a lot of pictures and it took us 1 hour and 41 minutes. We took lots of breaks and drank a lot of water. The benefit of starting counterclockwise is you see the wildflowers first and all the beautiful spots to get in the lake BUT it leaves more of the incline for the last 30 minutes. It wasn’t too challenging though. It was about 72 degrees when we started and it ended at around 83 degrees. The mosquitos were out in full force and the bees. It was a beautiful walk and really enjoyable. There is a bathroom at the start and the path is clearly defined. Give it a go!

This was our favorite hike during our week in the area. It's a bit of a drive from the Frisco/Dillon area, but WORTH IT! There was plenty of parking in the lot. There was also vault toilets. Walk the trail clockwise (start on the left of the lake). It begins with beautiful wildflowers around the lake. You'll walk through a pine forest near a large waterfall visible on the mountain side. You'll then face an uphill portion that's more rocky near the end of the trail. This took us about 1 1/2 hours to explore. Our kids (16, 13, and 11) didn't want to leave. The rain forced us away, but it was goregous!
