About Goose Pasture Tarn

Goose Pasture Tarn is a privately managed reservoir on the Blue River in Summit County, Colorado, located roughly two miles south of Breckenridge. The dam, a 57-foot zoned earthen structure, has been owned and operated by the Town of Breckenridge since 1970, while the surrounding land is private property. Access to the tarn is restricted to property owners and verified residents of the Town of Blue River, making this one of the more exclusive bodies of water in the county.

From above, the tarn is strikingly photogenic. The deep blue water sits in a high-mountain valley framed by the Tenmile Range, and visitors who catch a glimpse from nearby roads or trails often remark on how appealing it looks. But looks from a distance are as close as most people will get. The Town of Blue River requires residents to carry proper identification when using the tarn, and permits are issued only to property owners and their authorized guests. Short-term rental guests do not qualify for permits, a rule designed to keep usage manageable and preserve the quality of the experience for residents.

Access disputes have marked the tarn's recent history. The owner of the surrounding private property has at times blocked the path that residents traditionally used to reach the water, placing boulders across the route. The Town of Blue River has worked to negotiate new access agreements, and in recent years the tarn has reopened for summer recreation after a period of construction and restricted entry. Residents who do gain access can enjoy kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and fishing in a quiet setting with mountain views.

Because the tarn is not open to the general public, there are no public facilities, boat ramps, or parking areas. Residents who use the water bring their own gear and are expected to follow the rules set by the town. The surrounding area offers plenty of public recreation through the White River National Forest and the extensive trail systems near Breckenridge, but Goose Pasture Tarn itself remains a private amenity for the Blue River community. If you are not a Blue River property owner, plan to enjoy the view from a respectful distance.
