About Boulder Lake

Boulder Lake in Summit County is a picturesque alpine lake reached by a moderate hike through shaded forest, making it one of the more accessible backcountry lakes in the Tenmile Range area. The trail winds through stands of spruce and pine, keeping hikers cool even on warm summer days, before arriving at a serene lake basin framed by rocky ridges and a waterfall cascading from the cliffs above.

The hike to Boulder Lake is approachable for a wide range of fitness levels. The trail gains elevation gradually, with most of the climb spread over a comfortable distance. Families with older children and intermediate hikers will find the route manageable, and the scenery along the way holds interest from start to finish. The falls above the lake add a dramatic focal point that elevates this hike above many comparable destinations in the county.

One consideration: the trailhead access road is rough and may require a high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicle to reach the upper parking area. Visitors without a capable vehicle can park lower and walk the additional quarter mile to the trailhead without difficulty. The extra walk on the road is mild and does not significantly add to the overall effort.

The lake itself is a peaceful spot for a picnic, photography, or simply sitting on the shore and taking in the quiet. Fishing pressure is light, and the surrounding terrain downstream of the lake offers additional exploration for those who want to extend their day. Wildflowers bloom along the trail and around the lake margins during midsummer.

Boulder Lake has no developed facilities. There are no restrooms, no designated campsites, and no potable water at the lake. Backcountry camping is possible with proper Leave No Trace practices, and the setting is well suited to an overnight trip for families looking to introduce younger hikers to backpacking in a manageable environment.

For a half-day or full-day outing that combines shaded forest hiking, a beautiful waterfall, and a tranquil alpine lake, Boulder Lake delivers strong value without extreme difficulty.

Fabulous little lake, awesome falls above the lake, and a beautiful hike downstream. Perfect for a family backpacking trip.

I went for a hike today around 1PM, and as I do not have a 4WD, I tried driving to the trailhead but I made it partly up and walked probably a quarter of a mile to the trailhead. The hike wasn't too bad and it was mostly shaded, and the lake was quite pretty! The hike back was a bit uphill but it was fine, and the entire hike was quite enjoyable, took about three hours.
