About Frederick Reservoir

Frederick Reservoir, also known locally as Milavec Lake, is a town-owned lake in Weld County managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Sitting on the plains northeast of Denver with clear views of the Front Range mountains, this compact reservoir offers a convenient spot for fishing, walking, bird watching, and picnicking without needing to drive into the high country.

Fishing at Frederick Reservoir is a consistent draw year-round. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout by CPW and also holds bass, crappie, carp, and northern pike, giving anglers a solid variety of species to target. Most fishing happens from a dedicated casting platform along the shore, as the surrounding banks are lined with large boulders that make footing uneven. The town hosts an annual fishing clinic every May, making it a good introduction for beginners and families. Catches of eating-size fish are regularly reported.

A 1.25-mile gravel trail loops around the entire reservoir, making it popular for walking, jogging, and dog walking. The trail was recently upgraded with an additional layer of gravel and offers views of the mountains, surrounding plains, and the adjacent Bella Rosa golf course. At roughly 5,000 steps per loop, it provides a manageable workout that most fitness levels can handle. Dogs are welcome on the trail, and a dedicated dog park is located nearby.

Bird watching at Frederick Reservoir is notably productive, especially during winter months when the lake remains partially open water while other area lakes freeze over. This draws large flocks of geese and unusual bird species that make it a worthwhile stop for birders. Red and black foxes also inhabit the surrounding area, adding to the wildlife viewing opportunities.

Picnic areas with tables are spread around the lake, and covered picnic spots are available for reservation and rental. Parking is ample. The lake does experience seasonal algae blooms and a noticeable odor during spring and fall turnover periods, which is a natural occurrence in still-water bodies. Litter from heavy fishing use, including discarded line, bait containers, and trash near overflowing bins, has been a recurring concern raised by visitors. Despite these drawbacks, Frederick Reservoir serves as an accessible urban fishing and recreation spot for residents of the northern Front Range.

There is no real view from the parking or pinic area. Built up pond to walk around or fish from.

Absolutely filthy lake with trash EVERYWHERE. Fishing line for miles all over the rocks and shore. My first cast hooked line in the lake. Chip bags, worm containers, water bottles, and even a man's underwear litter the rocks around the water. I observed 2 dead fish floating in my given area. After cleaning my area to fish, I was shocked how few and wide trash cans were placed, and they were spilling over absolutely full. There's only one area to fish, that being a platform to csst. The rest of the place is unstable footing due to the boulders all around lake. I won't return there.

Good place to send your morning walking and thinking. Fish and frogs to greet you.

It's usually not an over crowded place when you want to drop a line or get some exercise walking or riding the path around it. There's a good variety of fish species and of good eating sizes. Some people complain about the stench when the lake is turning over in the spring and fall. That's natural with all bodies of water with no or little currents in them. I think it is pretty well maintained over all.

My dogs love it here the walk is great.. about 5,000 steps around the lake. The water has a bunch of green algae in it and my dogs jumped in. They are fine though so it's not toxic. Love this oark

Nice place to walk and take your dog. Clear view of the mountains. Always several people fishing. Amazing to see thousands of geese on the frozen parts in the winter
