About Windsor Lake

Windsor Lake sits right off Main Street in the town of Windsor in Weld County, offering a surprisingly full day of outdoor recreation just steps from local coffee shops and restaurants. The lake draws families, anglers, dog walkers, and cyclists throughout the warm months, and its paved pathway, swim beach, and rental watercraft make it one of the most accessible lakes along the northern Colorado Front Range. Pelicans and bald eagles are regularly spotted resting on rocks in the water, and waterfowl congregate in large numbers during early morning hours, making Windsor Lake a rewarding birding destination as well.

Swimming at Windsor Lake takes place at a roped-off swim beach where the water reaches about five feet deep. The beach includes a grassy area with shade trees, and outdoor rinse-off showers are available near the sand. Families with young children find the shallow, enclosed swimming area especially appealing, though some visitors note occasional algae blooms and recommend checking water quality advisories before heading out. Paddleboarding, pedal boats, and aqua-cycles can be rented on-site for seven dollars per thirty minutes with no advance reservation required, and life jackets are provided with every rental. The lake also serves as a calm, easy launch point for personal paddleboards, though a fee applies to bring your own.

Fishing at Windsor Lake produces trout, bass, catfish, and carp. A Colorado fishing license is required. The western shore offers quieter spots for casting, and a dock on the east side provides convenient fishing access, though night anglers report frequent snags on submerged rocks and sticks. The lake level can drop during dry spells, making boat fishing impractical at times and limiting shoreline access.

The paved walking and biking trail encircling the lake covers roughly two miles and is wheelchair accessible. Benches, public art installations, and a fenced dog park with lake access for dogs line the route. Prairie dogs are abundant along the north side of the path. A large playground near the beach caters to children of all ages, with equipment scaled for younger kids including shorter monkey bars. Port-a-potties and seasonal restrooms serve the park, though cleanliness varies.

Windsor Lake hosts a popular Thursday night summer concert series and a Saturday market with local vendors. Parking is limited but generally available even on weekend afternoons. The lake is free to visit and close to the Poudre River, making it an easy side trip for visitors exploring Weld County. Windy days can diminish the experience, so checking conditions beforehand is a smart move for paddlers and beachgoers alike.

This is such a beautiful area…sadly it has changed a bit. Please be aware when using the recreational area near the lake or using the path, especially if you wear ear buds. Some days there is pretty heavy 2-way traffic, including scooters and e-bikes (motorized vehicles are prohibited on the walking path but we have seen them there). Other days there’s gunfire (hunting?) If you can find/be out on a day when it’s quiet, it’s really a wonderful area!

Windsor Lake is a great place to walk with family friends and pets. Pathway is large and fits bikes, skaters and others. Great stops along the way with artwork, benches and even a dog park. Drop a line to catch fish (license is required). Seasonal activities on Windsor Rec.

Nice place to walk, though it'd be even better if there were more trees on the north, East and West sides of the lake.

It was not crowded. But the beach itself was dirty. I found seven beer twist off caps with my feet while we were there. It's a good thing I'm up to date on my tetanus shot. And I'm glad they weren't fishing hooks. I personally did not use the restrooms there but a couple of the people in my party did and it sounded like they were standard outside public restrooms. Not very clean. But the kids had fun. I'm not adding photos cuz they all have my children's faces in them.
