About Mead Reservoir

Mead Reservoir sits on the plains of Weld County just north of the town of Mead, offering a quiet escape from the bustle of the northern Front Range. Surrounded by open grassland and gentle rolling terrain, this small reservoir draws anglers, walkers, and nature lovers looking for a low-key spot to unwind without fighting crowds.

Fishing is the main draw at Mead Reservoir. Catfish are the star catch here, and regulars report solid catfishing sessions throughout the warmer months. The reservoir also holds other warm-water species, making it a dependable option when larger reservoirs along the I-25 corridor feel too crowded. Because the water level fluctuates with irrigation cycles, checking conditions before you go saves time and frustration.

Beyond the fishing, Mead Reservoir is a surprisingly good spot for wildlife watching. Visitors have spotted Sandhill Cranes wading along the shallows and foxes trotting through the surrounding grassland. The open landscape and relatively low foot traffic create ideal conditions for birding, especially during spring and fall migration windows.

A network of short paths loops around portions of the reservoir, offering roughly a mile of walking. The terrain is flat and manageable for all fitness levels, making it a solid choice for a morning stroll or an after-work wind-down. The area includes a small parking lot and restrooms, though facilities are basic.

Mead Reservoir is best experienced as a half-day destination rather than a full-day outing. Pack a chair, bring your rod, and settle in along the bank for a few quiet hours. Spring through early fall delivers the best fishing and the most comfortable weather, while winter visits reward patient birders with waterfowl sightings. The reservoir sits just minutes from Highway 66 and I-25, so access is quick from Longmont, Loveland, or the north Denver suburbs.

Kept very well, very peaceful, couldn't catch any fish, but that's not their fault:(

Very relaxing place to get away from town and back with nature.

Right now there isn't much water, but we've seen a Sandhill Crane, and a little fox that must live in the area because we keep seeing it. If you walk all the paths, you can get in a mile or so of walking. Bathrooms, and a parking lot for a handful of cars. Nice little spot.
