About Johnstown Reservoir

Johnstown Reservoir sits at the heart of Lake Park in Weld County, a favorite among locals who come for the fishing, stay for the walk, and keep coming back for the sunsets over the Front Range. Whether you are casting a line for rainbow trout at dawn or pushing a stroller along the paved loop trail in the afternoon, this reservoir delivers a reliable slice of Colorado recreation without the mountain drive.

The reservoir is stocked with a solid mix of warm- and cold-water species, including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, rainbow trout, channel catfish, bluegill, black crappie, white crappie, and common carp. Early-season fishing tends to produce the best results before summer algae and aquatic weeds thicken across the lake. Anglers work the shoreline from a fishing pier or find a quiet bank along the eastern edge. A town fishing permit is required on top of your valid Colorado fishing license: residents pay five dollars, while non-residents pay twenty-five dollars per year, with a cap of 250 non-resident permits issued annually.

Beyond fishing, the paved path circling the reservoir draws walkers, joggers, and cyclists throughout the year. The route is flat and exposed, so plan for full sun in summer and bring a hat. Lake Park itself adds a playground for families, covered picnic shelters with electricity, restrooms, and drinking water. The open terrain means you will catch steady breezes off the plains, which keeps conditions comfortable on all but the hottest days.

Johnstown Reservoir is located along the Interstate 25 corridor between Loveland and Longmont, making it an easy stop for anyone traveling through northern Colorado. The town of Johnstown has grown steadily, but the reservoir retains a neighborhood feel that regulars appreciate. If you are looking for a convenient Weld County fishing spot with walking trails and family-friendly amenities, Johnstown Reservoir checks every box.

So sad to see the water level so very low. Couldn't fish unless we waded through about 500y of mud. Will keep my eyes open to see when the water level comes back up!!

Is this a private reservoir? Doesn't seem to have a parking lot or public access.

It has a nice path around it. Not much wind or sun shade, so bring a hat.
