About Banner Lakes

Banner Lakes is a collection of small water bodies located in rural Weld County, Colorado, situated on the eastern plains northeast of the Denver metro area. This area serves as a habitat-rich destination where fishing and hunting are the primary recreational activities. The lakes sit within the open grassland landscape characteristic of Weld County, providing a very different outdoor experience from the mountain reservoirs to the west. For anglers and hunters looking for accessible plains-country water, Banner Lakes delivers a functional if somewhat rugged option.

Fishing at Banner Lakes has produced results for visitors, with anglers reporting catches as late as early October. The plains location means the fishery operates on a different seasonal calendar than mountain lakes, with longer ice-free periods and earlier spring warm-ups that can extend the productive fishing window. Visitors should come prepared with appropriate gear and low expectations for facilities, as this is not a developed recreation area with amenities.

Hunting is a significant activity around Banner Lakes, and visitors should exercise caution, particularly during Colorado's fall hunting seasons. Multiple visitors have noted active hunters in the area, and families with young children should be especially aware of the activity and maintain close supervision. The open grassland terrain around the lakes provides habitat for waterfowl and upland game birds, making it a draw for hunters during season. Wearing blaze orange during hunting season is strongly advised for anyone visiting the area.

Banner Lakes is best understood as a rural, minimally developed outdoor area rather than a polished recreation destination. There are no formal facilities, improved trails, or developed access points typical of more established Colorado fishing spots. The surrounding landscape is flat, open, and exposed to wind. Cell service may be limited in parts of the area. For visitors from the Front Range looking for a quick plains fishing or hunting outing without the drive to the mountains, Banner Lakes fills a practical niche, but expectations should be calibrated accordingly. Always verify current access permissions and hunting season regulations with Colorado Parks and Wildlife before visiting.

Not a place to take your kids. There are hunters all over that area shooting. At least keep an eye on them.
