About Windsor Lake

Windsor Lake rewards hikers who are willing to earn their views. Tucked high in the mountains of Lake County near Leadville, Colorado, this alpine lake sits at the end of the Windsor Lake Trail, a short but steep climb that gains significant elevation in a compressed distance. Once you crest the final switchback and the water comes into view, the panoramic mountain scenery makes every step worth it.

The Windsor Lake Trail is the primary way to reach the lake and serves as the main attraction. The route starts with a steep initial ascent that challenges your legs and lungs, especially at this altitude near 11,000 feet. Hikers consistently describe the trail as demanding but manageable, and most complete the out-and-back in a few hours. The key piece of advice from experienced visitors: do not stop at the first lake. Continue past it to reach the upper lake, where the scenery opens up even further and the crowds thin out. The trail can see steady foot traffic during peak summer weekends, but fellow hikers are friendly and the atmosphere stays welcoming.

Once you reach Windsor Lake, the terrain flattens out and you can walk the full perimeter for different vantage points of the surrounding peaks and ridgelines. The alpine setting is ideal for photography, a trailside lunch, or simply sitting and soaking in the quiet. Some visitors extend their trip by exploring additional trails in the area, and ATV access on nearby routes adds options for those who want to cover more ground. The road leading to the trailhead can be rough in spots, so a vehicle with decent clearance is recommended.

Come prepared for mountain conditions regardless of the calendar. Temperatures drop quickly at elevation, and afternoon thunderstorms are common during July and August. Pack layers, plenty of water, and high-energy snacks to fuel the climb. Parking at the trailhead is straightforward, though it can fill on busy weekends. Windsor Lake sits in one of Colorado's most scenic high-country corridors, with Leadville, Twin Lakes, and the upper Arkansas River valley all within a short drive. For hikers looking for an accessible alpine lake experience with genuine payoff, Windsor Lake delivers without requiring a full-day backcountry commitment.

The hike up is pretty steep but once you get to the first lake, it flattens out. Fantastic hike that’s worth checking out.

The Windsor Lake Trail is a fantastic trail. It is a bit challenging at times, especially on the way up, but the views are phenomenal and both lakes (don’t stop at the first one!) worth every minute of it. Prepare for a steep change of the altitude, pack a lot of water, clothes for the colder temperatures up at the top, some snacks to keep you energized, and you are up for a lovely hike. The trail can be a bit busy it at times everyone is nice and accommodating, just take your time and enjoy the views. This trail has easy and accessible parking, thought the road leading to it is a bit tricky.

Very short, but steep hike. Ended up walking around the entire lake. Great day for it.

Great hiking trail. Even better RC crawling trail.

There are a few hikes out here and they are all pretty. Some people even take their ATVs out here.
