About Twin Lakes Reservoir

Twin Lakes Reservoir rests at the base of Mount Elbert, Colorado's tallest peak, in Lake County just south of Leadville and roughly two and a half hours from Denver. The twin bodies of water sit along the road to Independence Pass, surrounded by mountain peaks that create some of the most photographed scenery in the Colorado Rockies. When the sun hits the surface, the water turns a striking blue-turquoise that draws photographers and sightseers year-round.

Fishing at Twin Lakes Reservoir produces good results for rainbow trout, with shore fishing accessible from multiple points around the lakes. Ice fishing is also popular here during the winter months when the reservoir freezes over. Beyond fishing, the reservoir is a hub for paddle sports including kayaking, paddleboarding, and tubing. The water stays cold due to the high mountain elevation, so most visitors stick to activities that keep them on top of the water rather than in it, though swimming is possible at various spots along the shore. Kayak rentals are available from a nearby outfitter and can be brought to the lake.

Dispersed camping is one of the biggest draws at Twin Lakes. Free first-come-first-served campsites are scattered around the reservoir, including ridge-top spots with panoramic mountain views. These sites fill quickly on weekends, so arriving early on Friday or midweek is the best strategy for securing a good spot. Weekend crowds have increased noticeably, and some visitors report issues with noise and fire ban violations during busy periods. Pull-off areas along the road provide easy access to the water, and restroom facilities are available at key points.

The scenery at Twin Lakes shifts dramatically with the seasons. Fall brings spectacular aspen foliage along the drive between the lakes and Aspen, making it one of the most scenic autumn routes in Colorado. The Leadville Race Series passes through the area, turning the lakeside into a lively spectator zone during event weekends. Picnicking along the shore is a popular low-key activity, though mosquitoes can be aggressive near sunset. Whether you are passing through on the way to Independence Pass or camping for the weekend, Twin Lakes Reservoir rewards visitors with mountain views that are hard to match anywhere in the state.

If you're in the area of Leadville or driving through twin lakes is a must visit. There's easy places to pull off with restrooms and access to the lake. During the Leadville race series it is a perfect very happening spot to view the racers.

Stunningly beautiful lake with snow-capped mountain views. When the sun shines on it, it looks blue/turquoise. Simply picturesque.

Beautiful lake surrounded by mountains. The views are so insanely gorgeous. Mt Elbert is right next to the lake with its magnificent presence.

Beautiful mountain vistas and numerous opportunities for water sports. We were there to walk around on the beach and take photos. Not too much hiking around the lakes, more like leisurely strolls to enjoy the view. There are numerous aspens, so I imagine fall the fall foliage would be spectacular. A hidden gem!

Breathtaking views of Twin Peaks, good fishing for Rainbow trout off the shores. Can't wait to visit deeper into the Summer when the lakes are warmer and more full.
