About Turquoise Lake

Turquoise Lake is one of Lake County's most celebrated alpine reservoirs, nestled in the mountains just west of Leadville, Colorado, at an elevation that puts you squarely in the heart of the Central Rockies. With crystal-clear water reflecting the surrounding peaks and dense conifer forests lining its shores, this lake lives up to its name and consistently earns praise as one of the most scenic spots in the state. Whether you are paddling, fishing, camping, or simply soaking in the views from a shoreline picnic, Turquoise Lake offers a well-rounded mountain lake experience that keeps visitors coming back season after season.

Kayaking and paddleboarding are top-tier activities here. The water tends to stay calm, especially in the morning and early afternoon, making it ideal for flat-water paddling. Visitors describe Turquoise Lake as one of the best kayaking destinations they have experienced in Colorado. The rocky shoreline means water shoes are a smart choice when launching, but once you are on the water the conditions are outstanding. Families appreciate the shallow areas near the beach where children can wade and play safely.

Fishing draws steady interest throughout the summer months, with shore fishing being the most common approach. Early summer tends to deliver the best conditions, and experienced anglers recommend arriving later in the day to avoid crowds. Trout are the primary target species, with lake trout and rainbow trout both present in the reservoir. The fishing can be hit or miss, but the scenery more than compensates on slower days.

Camping around Turquoise Lake is extremely popular. Several developed campgrounds offer sites along the shoreline, though they fill up fast during peak summer weekends. Some dispersed camping areas have been restricted in recent years, so checking current Forest Service regulations before your trip avoids surprises. The campgrounds and beach areas are well-maintained, with clean restrooms available.

The boat ramp provides easy launch access for kayaks, canoes, and small watercraft. A scenic drive around the lake is worth the trip on its own, with pulloffs offering panoramic views of the reservoir and surrounding mountains. Turquoise Lake sits close enough to Leadville for convenient resupply runs, yet the setting feels genuinely remote. Visiting in early summer, before the July crowds arrive, is the local's tip for the best experience.

While I was a little heartbroken about some of the dispersed camping being blocked off, it's always clean around the beach and in bathrooms. Beautiful as always. Easy launch access.

Love Turquoise in early summer. Nice camping, good fishing. Usually go later in the day for less people.

Probably the best place I've ever taken my kayak. Great place for kids to play in the water and fishing off the shore
