About Emerald Lake

Emerald Lake sits at roughly 10,000 feet in a quiet lodgepole pine forest along Halfmoon Road, about six miles west of Leadville in Lake County. Colorado's tallest peak, Mount Elbert, rises behind the treeline and frames the water on clear mornings. If you are looking for a mellow day near the high country without committing to a full backcountry trek, Emerald Lake delivers. Drive in, pick a picnic table, cast a line, and let the altitude do the rest.

Managed by the U.S. Forest Service within San Isabel National Forest, Emerald Lake is a designated day-use picnic and fishing area. Ten picnic sites with tables and pedestal grills line the shore beneath the pines, making it a reliable spot for a family cookout after a few hours on the water. The site charges an $8.00 daily access fee. Vault toilets are available on-site, and visitors consistently note they are among the cleanest restrooms in the Halfmoon Creek corridor.

Fishing is the main draw. Colorado Parks and Wildlife stocks the lake with rainbow trout throughout the summer season, and anglers report steady action on spinners, PowerBait, and small flies. Early mornings tend to be quieter and more productive before day-trippers arrive. A few reviewers warn that the trout can be finicky, following lures without committing, so patience and lighter tackle can pay off. Ice fishing is not practical here because the access road closes for winter.

Beyond the shoreline, Emerald Lake serves as a convenient base camp for bigger adventures. The Mount Elbert North Trailhead is just down the road, and free dispersed camping sites are scattered along Halfmoon Road for those who want to extend a weekend trip. Turquoise Lake and Twin Lakes are both a short drive away, giving visitors multiple fishing and boating options in a single trip.

The lake is best visited between late May and early October, when Halfmoon Road is plowed and accessible. Summer weekends can draw crowds, so arrive early for the best picnic sites and the quietest fishing. Dogs are welcome but should be kept under control around other visitors. Whether you spend an hour wetting a line or a full afternoon grilling beside the water, Emerald Lake offers a genuine high-altitude Colorado experience without the strenuous hike to earn it.

Great tranquil spot. Only been here without people so don't know how busy it is mid summer but it was great going in early fall.

This little lake is a mountain paradise, sitting at 10,000 feet in a lodgepole pine forest. Mount Elbert looms above the lake in the distance.

Road is now open going by the Emerald Lake. I'm currently the person in charge of the day use and picnic area. There is a $8.00 per day access fee to use the area. It has been stocked with rainbow trout several times this summer!

Terrible fishing spot. No fish present. Don't even waste your time fishing here. Turquoise lake is better.

Nice little lake. Just down the road from Mt Elbert Trail Head. Lots of free dispersed camping nearby. Lake area had best bathroom in the area.

Beautiful but the trout are a little tricky to catch. They like to follow your lure and taunt you.

Absolutely beautiful !!! The fishing is on the norm pretty good. Unfortunately at times there's a bunch of people and gets a little loud. But if you are fortunate to be there alone take the smells sounds and beauty in and thank the creator. WE ARE BLESSED
