About Mount Elbert Forebay

Mount Elbert Forebay is a high-altitude reservoir in Lake County that sits above Twin Lakes with direct views of Mount Elbert, Colorado's tallest peak. The combination of crystal-clear blue water, rugged boulder-lined shores, and towering mountain scenery makes this one of the most visually striking fishing spots in the state.

Fishing is the primary activity at Mount Elbert Forebay, and anglers report consistent action. Rainbow trout bite readily, with one visitor describing four straight hours of nonstop catches on a single outing. Lake trout and mackinaw are also present, giving anglers variety in their targets. Fly fishing with dry flies produces results around the rocky shoreline. A trail circles the entire lake, and parking is available on three sides, so anglers can spread out and find their own stretch of water. Be aware that large boulders line most of the shore, making some spots harder to access for casting or landing fish. A valid Colorado fishing license is required, and enforcement officers actively patrol the area.

Paddleboarding and kayaking are popular on the forebay's calm, clear water. The mountain backdrop, especially the views of Mount Elbert, makes every paddle session feel extraordinary. However, visitors should exercise serious caution on the water. The forebay has water turbines that activate in the evening, creating dangerous currents. Life jackets are strongly recommended at all times, and boaters should avoid being on the water when turbines are running. Multiple fatalities have been reported at this reservoir.

Free dispersed camping is available in the surrounding area, and reviewers who camped here describe waking up to some of the most peaceful and beautiful mornings in Colorado. The fall season brings especially vivid colors to the landscape. Hiking the trail around the lake is a worthwhile activity on its own, and bald eagle sightings add to the wildlife viewing opportunities.

The drive up to Mount Elbert Forebay passes above Twin Lakes, offering a dramatic birds-eye view on the approach. The area is less crowded than many popular Colorado destinations, delivering a sense of solitude that visitors consistently praise. September and fall visits are particularly recommended for stunning scenery and comfortable weather.

I’m giving this 1 star- Not because Forebay Reservoir isn’t a uniquely beautiful spot to enjoy or even a great place to go camping/hiking/Fishing… But because there needs to be extra percussions taken when it comes to this specific reservoir, possibly signs indicating the dangers of getting into this body of water after a certain time frame-as they have water turbines that turn on each evening. PLEASE, make sure to wear your life jackets when boating or kayaking in this Reservoir…I also believe they should commemorate all the people who have lost their lives here each year.

Trail goes all the way around the lake. There is also parking on 3 sides. There are big rocks around most sides that make fishing harder

This lake is a gem! The views are awesome. We fished for 4 hours straight and the rainbow trout were biting the entire time. On the way up there is a really nice birds eye view of the Twin Lakes.

Be careful for the fishing police hiding in bushes with binoculars from across the lake to try and catch someone touch bait and pole without a license.
