About Narraguinnep Reservoir

Narraguinnep Reservoir in Montezuma County is a scenic fishing and paddling destination in southwestern Colorado, managed by the Montezuma Valley Irrigation Company (MVIC) as a primary irrigation resource. Located near the town of Dolores, this reservoir offers fishing for pike, walleye, smallmouth bass, perch, and trout in a beautiful high-desert setting with mountain views and relatively few crowds.

Fishing is the headline activity at Narraguinnep Reservoir. The species diversity sets it apart from many Colorado reservoirs. Reviewers report catching pike, walleye, smallmouth bass, perch, and trout, with some anglers landing trophy-sized smallmouth bass. The combination of warm-water and cold-water species gives anglers options regardless of the season, though summer and early fall tend to be the most popular times to visit.

Motorized boats are no longer allowed on Narraguinnep Reservoir. The boat ramp was closed to all motorized watercraft due to invasive species concerns (specifically zebra mussels or similar barnacle-type organisms). This means water skiing and power boating, which were once popular here, are no longer permitted. However, the closure has been a silver lining for paddlers. Kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and other hand-launched, self-propelled watercraft are welcome. Several reviewers note that the old boat ramp area doubles as a good swimming spot now that boat traffic is gone.

Swimming is popular at Narraguinnep, particularly at the former boat ramp area. Reviewers describe the water as clean, and on hot summer days, the reservoir is a go-to spot for locals looking to cool off. The setting is not crowded, and visitors appreciate the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful views. Short walks are available around the reservoir, though this is not a destination for extended hiking.

Fossil hunting adds a unique twist to a visit. Reviewers mention fossils found around the lake, giving geology enthusiasts an extra reason to explore the shoreline. The reservoir's water level fluctuates with irrigation demand and drought conditions, and several reviews note periods of severely low water. When full, the reservoir is a stunning body of water; when low, the exposed lakebed diminishes the experience considerably. Check current water levels before planning a trip, especially during late summer when irrigation draw-down is heaviest.

Narraguinnep Reservoir works best as a summer day trip for fishing, paddling, or swimming. The lack of motorized boats keeps the water calm and quiet, making it particularly appealing for families with kids, paddleboarders, and anglers who prefer a peaceful setting over a busy marina.

Beautiful views, close to home, not crowded, and nothing like water on a very hot summer day. It is primarily a fishing lake but short walks are available. This little gem is worth another visit!

To start the water was too choppy to get in but the view is amazing! Definitely worth a stop and float if weather allows. The water was clean and the air crisp.

Great place to take a dip or paddle out on a self-propelled craft of your choosing. I saw people fishing but Iam not sure of its quality.
