About Joe Moore Reservoir

Joe Moore Reservoir is a quiet fishing and recreation spot tucked into the mesa country of Montezuma County in southwest Colorado, offering visitors a laid-back alternative to the busier waters near Durango and Cortez. Situated at an elevation that keeps summer temperatures comfortable without the thin-air challenges of high-alpine lakes, this reservoir draws anglers, paddleboarders, and families looking for a peaceful day on the water without crowds or complicated access.

Fishing is the primary draw at Joe Moore Reservoir. Trout are the main target species, and visitors report consistent bites from the shoreline and by small watercraft. The reservoir's manageable size means you can cover productive water without a boat, though a canoe or kayak opens up additional shoreline that bank anglers cannot reach. Stand-up paddleboarding is another popular activity here, with the typically calm surface providing stable conditions for beginners and experienced paddlers alike. Bring your own gear, as there are no rental facilities on site.

The setting around Joe Moore Reservoir is classic Four Corners landscape: open mesa views, pinon-juniper woodland, and wide-sky horizons that feel a world away from the Front Range. Cabins and rental properties dot the area around the lake, making overnight stays possible for those who want to fish at dawn and dusk when trout are most active. The quiet atmosphere is a consistent theme in visitor feedback, and it is exactly the kind of place where you can set up a chair, cast a line, and let the afternoon pass without interruption.

Water levels at Joe Moore Reservoir fluctuate depending on seasonal precipitation and irrigation demand, so checking current conditions before making the drive is strongly recommended. In dry years, the reservoir can drop significantly or even empty out, which affects both fishing and paddling access. The reservoir is best visited from spring through fall, with late spring and early summer typically offering the fullest water levels. No developed public facilities are available at the reservoir, so plan to be self-sufficient with water, food, and supplies. The nearest services are in Cortez, roughly 20 minutes to the west.

We went to look at a place for rent right on the lake, unfortunately, their is no water in Joe Moore right now. The cabin was remarkable, just a little too far out for us.
