About Wahatoya Lake Reservoir

Wahatoya Lake Reservoir sits just east of La Veta in Huerfano County, a 203-acre State Wildlife Area tucked into the eastern foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains with the Spanish Peaks rising to the south. The name Wahatoya comes from the Comanche word for "breasts of the earth," a reference to the twin Spanish Peaks that dominate the skyline from nearly every point along the shoreline.

The one-mile walking trail that loops around Wahatoya Lake Reservoir is the most popular feature here, and for good reason. The path winds through open meadows, stands of cottonwood and pine, and drops into a deep arroyo on the south side before climbing back up to lake level. A bypass trail skirts the arroyo for anyone who prefers flatter terrain. The views of the Spanish Peaks from the eastern shore are some of the best in the valley, and the trail is wide enough for comfortable walking, running, or a casual afternoon stroll with a dog on leash.

Fishing at Wahatoya Lake Reservoir targets cold-water species at roughly 7,100 feet of elevation. Rainbow trout, brown trout, and cutthroat trout are all present, and the reservoir also holds largemouth bass, crappie, and perch for warm-water variety. Only artificial flies and lures are allowed — no live bait — which keeps the fishing pressure selective and helps maintain healthy trout populations. Non-motorized boats including kayaks and canoes are welcome on the water, making this a solid choice for float-tube anglers and paddlers who want a quiet morning on a mountain reservoir.

Daigre Reservoir sits just across County Road 358 and is connected to Wahatoya by a pedestrian crossing and connector trail built in 2021, effectively doubling the hiking and fishing options in a single visit. Picnic areas are available near the trailhead, and the setting is ideal for bird watching, with waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds all common depending on the season.

A valid Colorado hunting or fishing license is required for access, including for hikers. There are no camping facilities at the wildlife area, and motorized boats are not permitted. The wind can pick up quickly in the open meadows, so a light jacket is worth packing even on warm days. La Veta is a short drive west and offers restaurants, lodging, and a small-town Colorado mountain atmosphere that pairs well with a day at the reservoir.

Great trail goes all the way around the lake with several alternative routes. Beautiful views! Can be windy in open spaces, less windy under trees.
