About Blue Lakes

Blue Lakes is a pristine mountain lake nestled just below treeline in Huerfano County, part of the southern Sangre de Cristo Range in south-central Colorado. With crystal-clear water, stocked trout, and panoramic views of surrounding peaks, Blue Lakes draws anglers, hikers, and campers looking for a genuine high-country experience without the crowds found at more well-known Colorado destinations. Visitors consistently describe the setting as beautiful, peaceful, and worth the scenic mountain drive to reach it.

Fishing is the primary draw at Blue Lakes. The lake is stocked with trout, and anglers report the water is well populated, though the fish can be selective about what they take. Fly fishing is particularly productive here, with the clear water and mountain backdrop making for an exceptional casting experience. Shore fishing is accessible around much of the lake. Early mornings are the prime window, and several visitors specifically recommend arriving at sunrise to watch the light hit the peaks while waiting for the first bite. Water temperatures stay cold even in summer at this elevation, which keeps the trout active.

The surrounding area offers dispersed camping in a forested setting with shade from pines and aspens. A section of the forest near the campsite area has been logged, which some visitors note detracts from the natural beauty, though the views beyond the clearing remain impressive. Pit toilets are available at the camping area, but there are no other developed facilities. No potable water, no hookups, no trash service. Nights at this elevation are cold, even during summer months, so bring warm layers and a quality sleeping bag rated for mountain conditions.

Hiking trails wind through the surrounding forest and alpine terrain, offering options for short walks along the lakeshore or longer routes into the high country. The drive up the mountain to Blue Lakes is scenic in its own right, climbing through multiple ecological zones with views opening up at each switchback. Visitors who are not acclimated to altitude should take the elevation seriously, as Blue Lakes sits well above 10,000 feet and the thinner air is noticeable.

The lake water is remarkably clean and clear, and on warm summer days the cold mountain water offers a bracing but refreshing option for wading or a quick dip. Blue Lakes is the kind of Colorado destination that rewards those willing to drive the mountain road and spend time away from developed recreation areas. Bring your fly rod, a camp chair, and a plan to watch the sunrise over the Sangre de Cristos.

Lovely little lake. Hiking trails are nice. The drive up the mountain is very nice. I preferred the lower elevation though just cause Im still a bit of a flatlander. Lol

The area that was logged takes away from the beauty; however, it is still very beautiful and peaceful. It's a great place to fly fish.
