About Lily Lake

Lily Lake in Huerfano County is a high-alpine destination tucked into the Sangre de Cristo Range, serving as both a fishing lake and a base camp for hikers heading up Mount Lindsey and surrounding 13,000-foot peaks. Reviewers consistently praise the crystal-clear water, the spectacular mountain views, and the relative quiet compared to more trafficked Front Range trailheads. The area feels remote and uncrowded, and several visitors describe it as one of Colorado's best-kept secrets.

The hike to Lily Lake is challenging. The trail starts easy but steepens significantly as you approach the lake, and reviewers recommend stretching beforehand and being prepared for a strenuous push. At the junction, bear right at the Lily Lake sign; going left leads toward the Mount Lindsey 14er route. Avalanche debris can cover portions of the trail in spring, slowing progress. Ridge routes offer scrambling for those seeking more technical terrain. Multiple hikers describe it as one of the harder day hikes they have done, but unanimously say the payoff is worth the effort.

Fishing at Lily Lake draws visitors who report good catches in clear water, even during May spring runoff. The lake sits in a pristine alpine setting that makes casting a line feel like a backcountry experience. Wildlife sightings are common along the approach and near the lake, including grouse, deer, elk, and bighorn sheep, making this a rewarding destination for nature watchers as well.

Dispersed camping lines the road leading to the trailhead, with several spots close to the start of the trail. The road is passable in 2WD when dry, though it narrows with low-hanging branches toward the end, and the upper trailhead access road requires 4WD. Google Maps directions can be unreliable here; approach through Gardner to avoid ending up at a locked gate on the opposite side. Narrow roads mean careful driving, but fellow visitors are described as friendly and helpful. Pack out all trash and fish remains, as some reviewers have noted irresponsible waste left at campsites.

Easy to get to. Road is decent except for a couple of spots right before the trailhead. If it’s dry you can make it in 2WD. Some dispersed camping along the way and a few spots close to the trailhead.

The Google Maps location is off by a couple of miles. Beautiful area. The dirt road to Upper Trailhead is best accessible by 4 wheel drive.

Beautiful camping and everything just wish people would have some respect for it. Where I camped someone disposed of fish bones and guts right next to the picnic table which was horrendous to smell. And the trash like why do people not learn PICK UP AFTER YOURSELVES!!

It was to beautiful out there. Looked like something out of a picture. Lots of camping spots, upper trailhead you will need a good off roading vehicle as the slopes up the mountain are very steep. Trail starts off easy but gets very hard the closer you get to the lake. Stretch a lot!

This campground area is a gorgeous place to fish, camp, hike, & photograph. We can't wait to go back! The views are SPECTACULAR! The water was crystal clear, even in May during spring runoff. The roads are narrow, but the fellow explorers are friendly and helpful. What a great place for an altitude adjustment! Take a picnic or plan to camp. This is a very peaceful place to go.
