About Daigre Reservoir

Daigre Reservoir is a quiet fishing and walking destination in Huerfano County, located about one mile east of the small town of La Veta in southern Colorado's Spanish Peaks region. Part of the Wahatoya State Wildlife Area managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, this reservoir offers a peaceful alternative to the busier waters found along the Front Range. The setting is beautiful: open grassland gives way to views of the Spanish Peaks to the west, and the reservoir itself sits in a gentle basin that attracts a variety of wildlife year-round.

Fishing at Daigre Reservoir follows special regulations. Artificial flies and lures only are permitted, and no bait fishing is allowed. Ice fishing is prohibited. Anglers target trout species including rainbow, brown, and brook trout, along with warm-water fish such as largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, perch, and catfish. Northern pike have also been reported by visitors. A valid Colorado fishing license is required, and as of July 2024, a fishing license is required even for visitors who only want to walk the trail around the reservoir.

A one-mile loop trail with a natural surface encircles the water, rated easy to moderate and suitable for a casual stroll or a longer walk with a dog. The trail offers excellent bird watching opportunities, with waterfowl, raptors, and songbirds frequenting the area. Non-motorized boating is allowed, though there is no boat ramp, so kayaks and canoes must be carried a short distance from the parking area to the water's edge. Plenty of parking is available near the reservoir.

Daigre Reservoir rewards visitors who appreciate simplicity. There are no playgrounds, concession stands, or paved paths here. What you get instead is a tranquil walk, a cast into clear water, and some of the best mountain views in southern Colorado. For anglers who prefer bait or want a larger body of water, nearby Lathrop State Park offers Martin Lake and Horseshoe Reservoir less than 15 minutes away.

I caught nice sized trout on a pistol Pete #6 about 6pm back to back. Right at the entrance. Met some locals that were amazing.

Peaceful with wildlife in and around the lake. A walking trail meanders around the lake. Non-motoruzed boating is allowed. Must carry in the boat/kayak, but not far. Lots of parking available. NOTE: New law as of July 1st: all must have a fishing license even just to walk at these lakes.
