About Naylor Lake

Naylor Lake rests at roughly 11,500 feet of elevation in Clear Creek County, Colorado, tucked into the alpine terrain along the corridor leading up to Silver Dollar Lake. This high-mountain lake sits on private property with limited public access, but the surrounding trail system and the stunning views from above draw hikers who want a genuine alpine experience without driving deep into the backcountry. If you are heading up Guanella Pass or toward Silver Dollar Lake, Naylor Lake is the scenic highlight you will remember from the drive.

The hiking near Naylor Lake rewards effort with elevation. The trail climbs steeply from the trailhead, gaining significant altitude through subalpine forest and open meadows. At this elevation, even fit hikers from lower altitudes will feel the thin air, so take your time and bring plenty of water. The views from the trail looking down onto Naylor Lake and its surrounding cabins are postcard-worthy, with the reflective surface of the lake framed by dense spruce and the rugged peaks of the Front Range.

Bird watching is productive along the approach trail, where you may spot mountain chickadees, Clark's nutcrackers, and various raptors riding thermals above the valley. Wildflower displays peak in July, adding splashes of color to the already impressive scenery. Keep an eye on the weather, because afternoon thunderstorms are common above 11,000 feet during summer months.

Because Naylor Lake itself is private property, direct shoreline access is restricted. The lake is best appreciated from the trail above or from the road on the way to other Clear Creek County destinations. The nearby Silver Dollar Lake and Murray Lake trails provide excellent alternatives for hikers seeking alpine lake access with the ability to reach the water.

Seasonal timing matters here. Snow typically closes the higher portions of the trail from late October through May, and mosquitoes can be aggressive in June and early July as snowmelt feeds standing water in the surrounding meadows. Mid-July through September offers the best window for comfortable hiking with clear trails and manageable bug pressure. Naylor Lake is a visual centerpiece of one of Colorado's most rewarding alpine corridors.

Beautiful trail with a stunning view of Naylor lake. Lots of mosquitos but it was still a little cold and they weren't terribly active. Around 11,500 ft of elevation and the trail was somewhat steep for a New Orleanian used to sea level. Thoroughly enjoyed the hike! I'll definitely do it again!

Caught a glimpse of this beauty on the way up to Silver Dollar Lake. There are cabins down below. I can't even imagine having the luxury of waking up to such a beautiful setting. Absolutely gorgeous!
