About Saint Marys Lake

Saint Marys Lake is a stunning alpine lake nestled in the Arapaho National Forest in Clear Creek County, Colorado, sitting at the base of Saint Marys Glacier. This high-altitude destination draws hikers, nature lovers, and adventurers year-round with its dramatic glacier-fed waters and panoramic mountain views. Located just a short drive from Denver, Saint Marys Lake offers one of the most accessible alpine lake experiences in the Colorado Front Range, making it a popular day trip for families and seasoned hikers alike.

The hiking trail to Saint Marys Lake is relatively short, taking roughly thirty minutes from the parking area, though the terrain is rocky and includes a moderate incline that can challenge visitors unaccustomed to Colorado's elevation. Multiple route options exist, with some paths steeper than others, so hikers can choose their preferred difficulty level. The trail is family-friendly enough for children, and visitors of all ages regularly complete the hike. During winter and early spring, snow covers much of the trail, adding an extra layer of adventure for those prepared with proper footwear. Summer hikers will find the lake a refreshing escape from Front Range heat.

Fishing at Saint Marys Lake rewards anglers with rainbow trout, and the alpine setting makes every cast feel special. Cliff jumping draws thrill-seekers to the lake's rocky edges during warmer months, while winter visitors can enjoy the sight of the lake frozen solid beneath the glacier. Skiing and snowboarding enthusiasts use the glacier's snowfields for summer turns, a rare opportunity in Colorado. Birdwatching and wildlife viewing are additional draws, as moose sightings near the lake are reported by multiple visitors.

Parking at the trailhead costs five dollars and is cash only, so visitors should plan accordingly. The area can get crowded on weekends and holidays, though many reviewers note the space feels open enough that crowds are manageable. Wind at the summit can be fierce, particularly in colder months, and visitors with small children should exercise caution near exposed areas. Wildfire seasons may affect access to roads, trails, and nearby camping areas in the Arapaho National Forest, so checking current conditions before visiting is strongly recommended.

Nearby attractions include Saint Marys Glacier itself, waterfalls along the trail, and expansive views of the surrounding alpine landscape. The area is ideal for picnicking, hammock lounging, and simply soaking in the mountain scenery. Whether visiting for a quick summer hike from Denver or a winter trek across frozen terrain, Saint Marys Lake delivers an unforgettable Colorado alpine experience with minimal time commitment.

Very rocky hike to the top, however short it is. Views and vibes are gorgeous. Lots of shredders looking for the summer turns on the snow. Saw a moose and her baby.

Super cool place to if you want to hike a little and be cool on a summer day. The lake was just beautiful and even if there was a lot of people hiking and going to it, it didn't feel like it was crowded. Nice views from up above it. I definitely recommend it for a day trip and be surrounded by nature.

Beautiful hike. End of May there was still snow covering most of the trail. Wouldn’t recommend doing the hike in sandals with a toddler, but you definitely can do it!

Great hike, beautiful scenery, caught it during a foggy spell so wasn't able to see clear across the lake, but the experience was five star all the same.

One of our favorite hikes! Such a nice way to get out of the heat and see some gorgeous views, waterfalls, and the lake! Lots of rocks on this trail, but we had people of all ages hiking with us! It's one of our favorites and we do it every year!! It is $5 to park (cash only!!)
