About Murray Lake

Murray Lake is a stunning alpine lake perched high in the mountains of Clear Creek County, accessible via a rewarding hike that begins at the Guanella Pass area southwest of Georgetown. Sitting above 12,000 feet, Murray Lake is part of a chain of high-elevation lakes that includes Silver Dollar Lake and Square Top Lakes, and it rewards hikers with sweeping views of pristine marshland, rugged peaks, and wildflower-filled meadows that feel like the roof of the world.

The hike to Murray Lake typically starts at the Silver Dollar Lake trailhead and extends beyond Silver Dollar Lake on the same trail. The total round trip from the trailhead to Murray Lake and back runs approximately 5 to 6 miles, depending on the route, with moderate to steep sections along the way. A couple of steep climbs and occasional snowfields persist well into summer at this elevation, but the trail is manageable for most hikers with reasonable fitness. The path crosses open tundra and marshy sections, so waterproof boots are recommended. Despite the elevation, reviewers consistently describe the trail as accessible and worth the effort for the payoff views at the top.

Murray Lake itself sits in an exposed alpine basin surrounded by low tundra grasses and rocky ridgelines. The lake has a wild, untouched quality — one visitor compared the landscape to Scotland, with rolling marshland extending in every direction. An old historic cabin stands near the lakeshore, adding a photogenic focal point and a sense of history to the remote setting. The cabin makes for excellent photographs, especially framed against the lake and peaks behind it.

Fishing is possible at Murray Lake for those willing to carry gear up the trail, and the remote setting means very little fishing pressure compared to more accessible lakes. The lake holds small trout, and fly fishing along the shoreline can produce bites in calm conditions. Dogs are welcome on the trail and reviewers note the hike is very pet-friendly, though the steep sections and snowfields require some caution with smaller dogs.

Murray Lake is a seasonal destination, typically accessible from late June through October depending on snowpack. Early-season hikers should expect snow crossings. There is no fee to access the trailhead or the lake, and vault toilets are available at the Guanella Pass trailhead parking area. Bring plenty of water, as there are no services once you leave the trailhead, and afternoon thunderstorms are common above treeline in summer. Start your hike early to be below treeline by early afternoon.

Fantastic lake/marshland views for those who want to hike a high elevation with a fairly easy trail to traverse for almost everyone. Very dog/pet friendly trail as well. A couple steep sections to climb and snow banks to maneuver through but a great trail for anyone to get out for some views. Don't forget to bring enough water!
