About Abyss Lake

Abyss Lake rests in a dramatic alpine cirque beneath the towering east face of Mount Evans in Clear Creek County, Colorado. At roughly 12,650 feet in elevation, this is one of the highest named lakes in the state, and the hike to reach it is a genuine high-country adventure that rewards strong hikers with one of the most spectacular settings in the Front Range. The lake earned its name honestly: it sits at the bottom of a sheer headwall, surrounded by rocky cliffs that give the entire basin an otherworldly, cathedral-like atmosphere.

The trail to Abyss Lake begins near the Scott Gomer Creek trailhead and covers approximately 6 miles one way with significant elevation gain. The route passes through beautiful aspen groves and follows a creek corridor before climbing steeply through the section hikers call the Bowling Alley, a narrow, rocky stretch that demands careful footing on both the ascent and descent. The final approach into the cirque opens up to reveal the small, jewel-toned lake cradled against the mountain wall. Most visitors plan a full day for the round trip.

Trail running is another popular way to experience the Abyss Lake trail. Locals use the lower sections as a regular Saturday morning route, taking advantage of the well-defined path and steady grade for a challenging workout with rewarding scenery. The aspen-lined creek sections are particularly striking in late September when fall color peaks.

Winter brings a different character to the area. Snowshoeing up the trail after a fresh powder day delivers outstanding conditions and near-total solitude. The basin holds snow well into spring, so winter access extends longer than many Front Range destinations.

Weather is a serious consideration at this elevation. Afternoon thunderstorms and hail are common during summer months, and there is almost no shelter above treeline. Experienced visitors recommend using scattered boulders for emergency cover if storms roll in. An early morning start is essential during July and August to clear the exposed terrain before afternoon weather builds. The trail is entirely undeveloped with no facilities, so hikers should bring all water, food, and navigation tools. Cell service is unreliable throughout the approach and nonexistent at the lake itself.

It's a strenuous hike but the view of the little lake beneath Mt. Evans is well worth it.
