About Idaho Springs Reservoir

Idaho Springs Reservoir is a tranquil mountain lake tucked into the forested slopes of Clear Creek County, Colorado, earning a 4.7-star rating from visitors who call it one of the best lakes in the state. Set against scenic mountain views with peaceful waters reflecting the surrounding peaks, this reservoir offers catch-and-release trout fishing, picnicking, and a genuine backcountry experience accessible from the I-70 corridor near Idaho Springs. If you are searching for a rewarding mountain lake hike without driving hours from Denver, this is a destination worth the effort.

The most common approach to Idaho Springs Reservoir descends from Echo Lake along the Chicago Lakes Trail. The hike starts near Echo Lake on Mount Evans Road and drops down through rocky terrain before reaching a private road that leads to the reservoir. The trail is mostly shaded, which is a welcome feature on warm summer days, but the footing is rockier than photos suggest. Some sections are steep and require careful navigation, making this hike unsuitable for toddlers walking on their own. The climb back up from the lake is a genuine workout, so acclimation to altitude is important for visitors coming from lower elevations.

Fishing is the primary draw at Idaho Springs Reservoir, with excellent trout fishing reported by anglers. The reservoir operates under catch-and-release regulations, so plan to enjoy the sport without keeping your catch. The peaceful setting and productive waters make it a favorite among Colorado anglers who rate it among their top fishing spots statewide. Bring your own gear, as there are no rental facilities at the lake.

The trail passes through sections of private property, and posted signs remind hikers to stay on the designated route. Once you move past the private road section and enter the Mount Evans Wilderness area, the scenery opens up beautifully. The reservoir itself is surrounded by mountain terrain that is stunning in every season. Winter visits offer a magical, snow-covered landscape, while summer brings lush greenery and wildflowers along the approach trail.

There are no developed facilities at the reservoir, so pack plenty of water, food, and everything you need for a self-supported outing. The trail is family-friendly for children old enough to handle rocky terrain, and the shaded sections make it manageable in summer heat. For hikers wanting more distance, Chicago Lake sits about 5 miles farther up the trail and offers an extended alpine experience. Idaho Springs Reservoir stands on its own as a gorgeous mountain fishing destination that delivers a satisfying day trip from the Front Range.

Private road. Private property. It is really irritating seeing this everywhere in areas of Colorado which should be public lands. At this rate, soon all of the old forest service, logging, and mining roads will be privatized and closed to the public. It appears that Texans have infiltrated all of Colorado. The first part of the hike down from Echo Lake is pretty rocky until you get to the private road with signs reminding you that it is private property. You won’t get away from this annoyance until you get up into Mt Evans Wilderness.

We came down from Echo Lake to the Chicago trail then we went along the private road to the Lake. It was so gorgeous the whole way down. It is pretty dangerous at certain parts. I wouldn't recommend bringing toddlers unless you carry them. Once you get to the lake you are allowed to fish. It is a catch and release though just a heads up. The climb back up is a bit of a challenge but in a good way. Wouldn't recommend it for someone who is coming from out of town but for a local or someone who has at least acclimated to the air absolutely. Bring plenty of water!
