About Clear Lake

Clear Lake is a high-mountain alpine lake in Clear Creek County, nestled along the scenic Guanella Pass Road just a few minutes off the interstate yet feeling worlds away from civilization. Rated 4.8 stars by 145 reviewers, this compact lake sits in a stunning mountain valley surrounded by peaks, aspens, and evergreens that explode with color during fall foliage season. The lake is a popular stop for travelers driving the Guanella Pass scenic byway, and its proximity to the Denver metro area makes it one of the most accessible high-alpine lake experiences in Colorado.

Fishing at Clear Lake centers on rainbow trout, which are stocked and provide consistent action for anglers using spinners and small jigs. Rooster tail lures are a proven producer, and visitors report catching multiple trout in a single outing. Local artisan lures from the Denver metro area have also gained a following here. The lake is small enough that a trail circles the entire shoreline, giving bank anglers access to the full perimeter. However, the lake's popularity means crowding is a significant issue, especially on weekends when anglers sometimes cast uncomfortably close to one another. Colorado Parks and Wildlife rangers make regular rounds checking fishing licenses, so visitors should arrive prepared with valid credentials.

Kayaking and paddleboarding are possible on Clear Lake when wind conditions cooperate, though the water temperature stays cold year-round due to the high elevation. The lake is not large, so paddle outings are more about soaking in the alpine scenery than covering distance. Visitors should be mindful of anglers when paddling and give fishing lines a wide berth. A small waterfall can be found upstream if you explore the trail along the inlet, adding a short hiking component to any visit.

The area around Clear Lake includes vault toilet facilities, a parking area, and picnic spots that make it a practical stop for families driving Guanella Pass. Parking fills quickly on weekends and during peak fall color season, so arriving early is strongly recommended. The dirt road leading to the lake can be rough in spots. Dogs are welcome and frequently seen along the shoreline, and the relaxed atmosphere attracts visitors who simply want to sit by an alpine lake and enjoy the quiet mountain air. The elevation brings cooler temperatures and occasional wind even in summer, so layering is wise. Clear Lake also serves as a convenient staging point for hikers heading toward the more crowded Guanella Pass and Mount Bierstadt trailheads, offering a calmer alternative when those areas are at capacity. The fall colors along the pass road and around the lake are among the best in Clear Creek County, drawing photographers and leaf-peepers from across the Front Range.

Perfect spot to pull off, eat, change your shoes, walk the dog & use the facilities. If Guanella/Abyss are too crowded, head here for a breather.

What a wonderful stopping point in Guanella Pass to take in the fall colors and stretch the legs! Very, very crowded at peak time and hard to find parking. But enough space to spread out once parked. Stunning!

Gorgeous place and great fishing. I took off a star only because it's SO busy and people have no idea what space means. Literally casting right next to us. The people ruin the relaxing vibe.
