About Redtail Lake

Redtail Lake anchors one of the most surprising pockets of wilderness along the South Platte River corridor in Arapahoe County, Colorado. Sitting at the edge of the Denver metro's southern suburbs, this lake and its surrounding open space pack an outsized amount of outdoor recreation into a compact, accessible setting that visitors regularly describe as nature's amusement park.

Fishing at Redtail Lake centers on carp and bass, with the north end of the lake holding particularly impressive carp that draw dedicated anglers back season after season. Smallmouth and largemouth bass are also present, though they tend to run smaller. The adjacent South Platte River adds a second dimension to any fishing trip, with river access on the east side of the lake offering moving-water opportunities for those who want to mix it up. Evening sessions along the river are a local favorite, especially during cooler months when the bite picks up.

Kayakers and canoeists will find Redtail Lake an excellent flatwater destination, and experienced paddlers sometimes launch on the South Platte and paddle into the lake when river flows exceed 150 cfs. The water is notably clear, making for pleasant paddling conditions with good visibility to the bottom in most areas. There is no formal boat ramp, so plan on a carry-in launch.

The trail system around Redtail Lake is paved and well-maintained, connecting to the broader South Platte Trail network. Day hikers, walkers, and runners use these paths year-round, and wildlife sightings are a consistent highlight. Visitors report seeing a wide diversity of birds, snakes, toads, and wildflowers along the shoreline and adjacent riparian habitat. The area is a genuine birding hotspot for the south metro region.

Parking is available on-site but requires a fee, so plan accordingly. The paved trails and relatively flat terrain make most of the area accessible for strollers and wheelchairs. Redtail Lake is open year-round, with spring and fall delivering the most comfortable conditions for fishing and hiking. Summer afternoons can draw crowds, so early mornings reward visitors with quieter water and better wildlife viewing. For Arapahoe County residents looking for a genuine outdoor experience without the mountain drive, Redtail Lake is one of the best options south of Denver.

Awesome little piece of the wilderness tucked into the city. You have to pay for parking but you get nature's amusement park. Tube down the S. Platte, fishing available at multiple ponds/lakes and the river. Plenty of opportunities to check out wildlife. Lots of birds, snakes, toads, spiders and a great diversity of flowers and all the critters that go along with them. I'm going to be hiking in a lot this summer.

Seen HUGE carp in smaller part of lake on north side. Caught a few small Bass. South Platte River is right next to the lake on the east side. Easy access.
