About Blackrock Lake

Blackrock Lake occupies the southern end of South Platte Park in Arapahoe County, a quiet pocket of open space between Littleton and Columbine Valley. The small lake sits along the South Platte River corridor and connects to the larger park trail system, making it a natural stop for walkers, cyclists, and anglers exploring the greenway south of Chatfield Reservoir.

Fishing is the main activity. The lake holds a mix of warm-water species including bass and panfish, and trout from the adjacent South Platte River occasionally wander in from Chatfield Reservoir upstream. Fishing here is not trophy-level, but the lake rewards patient anglers willing to work the banks. Worms and small lures produce the most consistent results. The lake offers handicapped-accessible fishing access, a welcome feature for anglers with mobility challenges.

Paved trails loop around the lake and connect to the broader South Platte River Trail, a multi-use path popular with cyclists and runners. The trail network extends north toward Chatfield State Park and south through the river corridor, providing miles of connected riding and walking. Parking is available in three lots along the park, though spaces fill quickly on weekends and reservations may be required.

Blackrock Lake has no swimming, no boating, and no motorized watercraft. This is a bank-fishing and trail-walking destination, and visitors appreciate the quieter atmosphere compared to nearby Chatfield. The park draws bird watchers who scan the shoreline and adjacent riparian habitat for waterfowl, herons, and songbirds.

Bring your own food and water, as there are no concessions or developed picnic facilities at the lake itself. The best times to visit are weekday mornings when parking is easier and the trails are less crowded. For anglers, early morning and evening produce the best bite. Blackrock Lake is not a destination on its own, but it adds a peaceful stop to any trip along the South Platte River corridor.
