About South Catamount Reservoir

South Catamount Reservoir sits along the road to Pikes Peak, offering a tranquil mountain setting with crystal-clear water and panoramic views that catch many visitors by surprise. Located in Teller County near Colorado Springs, this reservoir draws anglers, kayakers, and hikers who want a scenic escape without driving deep into the backcountry.

Fishing is the main draw at South Catamount Reservoir, with trout being the primary catch. Reviewers report landing good-sized fish from the shoreline, and the reservoir's calm waters make it a productive spot for both casual anglers and more experienced fishermen. The clear water and mountain backdrop make every cast feel worthwhile, and families regularly spend full days here fishing together.

Kayaking and paddling are popular on the reservoir's peaceful surface. The water stays calm enough for a relaxed paddle, and the surrounding Pikes Peak scenery makes it one of the more photogenic kayaking destinations near Colorado Springs. Visitors have described it as one of their favorite kayaking lakes in all of Colorado.

Hiking trails circle the reservoir area, giving visitors a chance to explore the shoreline and surrounding terrain on foot. The trails are dog-friendly, which adds to the appeal for local residents looking for an outdoor outing with their pets. Wildlife sightings are a bonus here, with bald eagles spotted soaring over the water.

A few things to know before you go: parking requires an online reservation, and spots fill up, especially on weekends. A ranger staffs the toll booth and will turn away visitors without a reservation, so plan ahead. The drive from Colorado Springs takes roughly 30 minutes, and the scenic loop road through the reservoir area is worth the trip on its own. Visitors should also note that picnic facilities are limited, so packing your own setup is a good idea. Early morning visits tend to be less crowded, offering the most peaceful experience on the water.

I've lived here all my life and driven up Pikes Peak many times, but this is the first time I've ever been to the Catamounts. Lots of great hiking, wonderful fishing spots, and breathtaking views all around! We'll definitely go back.
