About Crystal Creek Reservoir

Crystal Creek Reservoir sits along the road to Pikes Peak in Teller County near Cascade, Colorado, offering a scenic mountain lake experience just minutes from Colorado Springs. The reservoir fills a basin surrounded by forested hillsides, and its crystal-clear water against a backdrop of Pikes Peak makes it one of the most photographed stops on the drive to the summit. Rangers maintain the area well, and the combination of trout fishing, easy walking trails, and a small gift shop and trading post gives visitors a reason to linger rather than just pass through on their way up the mountain.

Fishing at Crystal Creek Reservoir is the primary draw, with trout biting actively and frequently enough that families with kids regularly catch the maximum allowed on their permit. Several visitors report catching three or more trout per hour, making it an excellent spot for beginners and children learning to fish. The trout tend to run small, with many requiring catch and release, but the consistent action keeps anglers engaged. A fishing permit and parking reservation are required, with entry fees around five dollars plus a one-dollar reservation fee. Reservations should be made ahead of time through the online system.

Kayaking and paddleboarding are popular on the reservoir, though getting watercraft down to the shoreline requires carrying them down steep gravel slopes. The terrain around the water is slanted and loose, making lake access moderately challenging and not wheelchair accessible. A trail follows the edge of the reservoir and provides an easy, scenic walking route with views in every direction. The water is a drinking water source for the surrounding area, and swimming and wading are prohibited to protect water quality.

The reservoir area includes port-a-potties, a gift shop and trading post, and a small cabin attraction where visitors can learn about Gold Rush history and pan for gold in small ponds. Rangers are visibly present on trails and throughout the grounds, contributing to a safe and well-maintained atmosphere. Fall visits are especially rewarding when the surrounding flora shifts into vibrant autumn colors, creating a painterly backdrop against the clear water.

Crystal Creek Reservoir operates on a seasonal schedule with limited hours, closing as early as 4 p.m. on some days. The reservoir has undergone periods of draining for dam maintenance and repair work, so checking current water levels and access status before visiting is advisable. Entry fees for the Pikes Peak area range from ten to fifteen dollars. Wind can pick up around the reservoir, and temperatures at elevation drop quickly, so layers are recommended. The reservoir sits within easy reach of the Pikes Peak Summit, the Pikes Peak Highway bus tour, and the broader Cascade and Manitou Springs area, making it a natural addition to any Pikes Peak day trip from Colorado Springs.

Beautiful place. On the way up to pikes peak. Store wasn’t open which was disappointing. Quiet and serene. Mildly easy to get down to the water. Gravel would make it difficult for some due to slanted terrain. Early morning with the sun rising was a nice time. No one else was around which makes for a pleasant spot to get scenery pictures. I recommend stopping here.

Last Sunday it’s open for the season. Really enjoyed the trail around the lake and fishing. The trout were all so small. All throwbacks but actively biting. Everybody seemed to be catching them. The reservoir area was super clean and surrounded by beauty in every direction. Many thanks to the Rangers for keeping everything in order. Seeing them everywhere, even on the trail, made me feel really safe out there. I was super bummed that they close at 4. I wasn’t ready to go. Can’t wait till next year!

I love coming here to fish and just spend the day here. It is only $5 and a $1 parking reservation fee. You will need to make your reservation ahead of time. It’s to hot in the summer you’ll be able to come here as easily cool off.
