About Lake Avery

Lake Avery sits in the wide-open rangeland of Rio Blanco County, about 20 miles south of Meeker along County Road 8. If you are looking for a quieter Colorado fishing destination away from the Front Range crowds, this small reservoir delivers solid catches in a setting that feels refreshingly uncomplicated. The surrounding terrain is mostly treeless rolling hills, which means unobstructed views of the White River valley and the peaks beyond.

Fishing is the main draw at Lake Avery, and anglers report consistent action for rainbow trout and brown trout, with some fish reaching 14 inches or better. Crayfish are also present, adding another option for those who want to diversify their catch. Shore fishing access is straightforward around much of the lake, making it a good choice for families with younger kids who need room to spread out. Fly fishing works well from the banks in the morning and evening hours when insect hatches bring trout to the surface.

The reservoir is compact enough that float tubes and small non-motorized boats can cover it efficiently. Kayakers and canoeists will find easy launch points along the shoreline, though there is no formal boat ramp. The calm water and manageable size make Lake Avery a solid pick for paddlers who prefer a relaxed outing over a full-day expedition.

Facilities are basic but functional. Visitors will find vault toilets and picnic tables on site, both reported to be in good condition. There is no designated campground directly at the lake, but dispersed camping options exist on nearby BLM land, and the town of Meeker offers additional lodging and services. Parking is available at the access area.

Seasonal timing matters here. Lake Avery fishes best from late May through October, with summer weekends drawing the most visitors. Despite its small footprint, the lake can feel crowded on peak days, so midweek visits or early morning arrivals tend to offer a better experience. The reservoir has undergone dam repairs in the past, so checking current water levels before making the drive is worth the effort. Winter access is limited, and the road conditions can deteriorate after heavy snowfall.

Lake Avery works best for anglers, families seeking a peaceful half-day outing, and anyone who values wide-open western Colorado scenery over resort-style amenities.
