About Chapman Reservoir

Chapman Reservoir is a small, scenic mountain lake in Rio Blanco County that draws campers, anglers, and paddlers looking for a quiet retreat in the White River National Forest area. Surrounded by rolling hills and dense forest, the reservoir offers the kind of solitude that larger Colorado destinations cannot match. Visitors consistently praise the beauty of the setting and the peacefulness of the area, making it a favorite weekend getaway for those willing to drive into more remote terrain.

The USFS campground at Chapman Reservoir operates on a first-come, first-served basis and fills quickly on weekends, with occupancy reaching 80 percent or more during peak season in September. Despite its official listing as a light-usage campground, the word has gotten out. Campsites are clean and well-maintained, with wide, old-style fire rings that campers appreciate, vault toilets, potable water, and trash dumpsters. A camp host is on site and reviewers describe them as friendly and helpful.

The reservoir supports fishing, paddle boarding, canoeing, and rafting. While the water is not always crystal clear, it remains a pleasant spot to spend time on the water. Dogs are welcome at the campground, though not all visitors keep them leashed. The surrounding area offers hiking on small trails, and the terrain above the reservoir leads to hunting grounds accessible by truck or on foot. The road beyond the reservoir climbs steeply with large rocks, so high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicles are recommended for those heading to higher elevations.

Chapman Reservoir sits at an elevation that brings fall colors by mid-September, with daytime temperatures in the 70s during that period. The area is bear country, with fresh tracks commonly spotted along the far shore. Night skies here are remarkably dark, making this an excellent location for stargazing and astrophotography. Snow can linger on the access road into early June, so visitors planning early-season trips should check conditions. The campground charges a fee, but the quality of the facilities and the scenery justify the cost for most visitors.

Beautiful Campground with a small but still pretty lake for fishing or paddle boarding. The night skies are phenomenal and great for astrophotography (my astrophotography pic was my very first one, so be kind). One big suggestion: if you are going up past the reservoir to the top for hunting, you will want a truck, it's a steep and rough climb, if you don't have a truck, I would say you should hike. The rocks get big and the road gets to 4 wheeling levels. We were lucky enough to get there while it was still in the 70s and the leaves were changing. Go now if you want the same experience!

Nice USFS campground. For a campground listed as light usage it was quite busy in mid September. 80% full on the night we stayed. Pleasant camp host here. Water and vault toilets available and trash dumpsters. Best campfire rings I seen in a a USFS campground in a very long time! They were of the older lower and wider variety.

I love this campground! It’s first come first serve, but you can’t beat the views and how close you are to the reservoir!
