About Kenney Reservoir

Kenney Reservoir is a small, well-maintained reservoir just outside Rangely in Rio Blanco County, offering free day-use access and a surprisingly polished facility for such a remote corner of northwestern Colorado. Reviewers describe it as a hidden gem where families, anglers, and road-trippers can pull off the highway and enjoy the water without crowds or entrance fees.

Fishing at Kenney Reservoir is a primary activity, with floating docks providing easy access for bank anglers and families with children. The reservoir produces consistent catches, and reviewers report good fishing even on weekends when boat traffic is present. Ice fishing is available in winter, with the reservoir freezing solid enough for safe access by January. A valid Colorado fishing license is required.

Boating is welcome at Kenney Reservoir, with two boat ramps available for motorized and non-motorized watercraft. A boat launch fee applies, though day-use access on foot is free. Paddleboarding and other water sports are popular during summer months, and the reservoir's manageable size makes it approachable for casual boaters. Wind can pick up in the afternoon and affect fishing conditions.

The day-use facilities are a standout feature for a reservoir this size. Manicured grass areas with sprinkler systems, picnic tables, charcoal grills, garbage cans, and a covered pavilion create a park-like setting. A separate fenced dog area gives pet owners a place to let their dogs run. Restrooms are available seasonally and are described as small but reasonably clean, though at least one reviewer notes the pit toilets are rough. A walking trail connects the reservoir to the town of Rangely.

Kenney Reservoir sits in a scenic high-desert landscape that surprises visitors who stumble upon it while driving through the area. The views are striking, and the quiet atmosphere draws people who want to relax by the water without the bustle of more popular Front Range reservoirs. There is no cell phone service at the reservoir, so plan accordingly. A strict no-glass policy is enforced with zero tolerance. Mosquitoes and gnats can be an issue, particularly near the water in summer, so bring insect repellent.

It's an awesome place for water sports. What would make it better is walking trails.
