About Road Canyon Reservoir Number Two

Road Canyon Reservoir Number Two in Hinsdale County is a backcountry fishing destination that has drawn anglers for decades. Located on rough, remote roads in the San Juan Mountains, this reservoir rewards those willing to make the bumpy drive with reliable rainbow trout fishing and genuine solitude. Visitors who have fished here for 40 years attest to its long history as a productive fishery, and recent reports confirm trout in the 15- to 20-inch range still come out of this water.

Fishing is the defining activity at Road Canyon Reservoir Number Two. Rainbow trout dominate the catch reports, with early morning being the most productive window and late afternoon offering fair results. Fly fishing and conventional tackle both produce here. Ice fishing during winter months targets the same trout population, with reviewers describing superb catches of big, healthy fish through the ice. The reservoir has been a generational fishing spot for Colorado families, with visitors teaching their kids to cast here just as their parents did.

Kayaking is possible on the reservoir, and visitors have been spotted paddling the water alongside anglers. Wind can be a significant factor at this elevation, so paddlers and anglers alike should pack layers and be prepared for sudden gusts that can make conditions challenging.

Wildlife viewing is a notable bonus at Road Canyon Reservoir Number Two. Reviewers report seeing moose, ducks on the water, and cattle grazing in the surrounding meadows. The remote location and minimal human traffic create conditions where wildlife sightings are common rather than exceptional.

Access is the primary challenge. The road to Road Canyon Reservoir Number Two is rough and narrow, and multiple reviewers describe it as difficult driving. Meeting oncoming vehicles on the single-track road adds complexity. High-clearance vehicles are strongly recommended, and visitors should plan for slow travel speeds on the approach. There are no developed facilities at the reservoir, making this a bring-everything-yourself destination.

Despite the access challenges, Road Canyon Reservoir Number Two remains a cherished fishing spot for those who know it. The combination of large rainbow trout, peaceful surroundings, year-round fishing opportunities including ice fishing, and wildlife encounters makes the rough drive worthwhile for anglers seeking a remote Colorado mountain fishing experience.

The fishing was good early in the morning and fair in the late afternoon. Ducks were on the water and the area was beautiful.

I have been coming here for the past forty years, and have ALWAYS come home with at least ONE fish. However, this year, and years past, the lake has slowly been neglected...to the point that I didn't get even ONE BITE the whole week. I think that the Colorado Division of Fish and Game has COMPLETELY NEGLECTED this entire region of the state, as far as Fish Management is concerned.
