About Lake San Cristobal

Lake San Cristobal is Colorado's second-largest natural lake, a stunning alpine body of water formed roughly 700 years ago when the Slumgullion Earthflow dammed the Lake Fork of the Gunnison River. Sitting at 9,003 feet in the San Juan Mountains just south of Lake City, the lake stretches 2.1 miles long and drops to 89 feet at its deepest point. If you have been searching for a high-altitude Colorado lake where you can camp on the shore, paddle across glassy water, and watch aspens turn gold in September, this is the one.

Fishing at Lake San Cristobal targets cold-water species typical of Colorado's high country. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout and also holds brown trout and cutthroat trout. You can fish from public access points along the eastern shore near Wupperman Campground or near the lake outlet at the north end. A valid Colorado fishing license is required. Boat inspections are mandatory for all motorized and trailered watercraft, with CPW inspectors on duty daily from 6am to 8pm at the boat ramp gate.

Boating and paddling are popular here. The public boat ramp, dock, and parking area sit along the west side of the lake. Motorized boats are permitted during inspection hours. Kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards do not require registration and can launch freely. Seasonal kayak rack spaces are available for seventy-five dollars. The calm, protected waters make this an ideal spot for paddlers of all skill levels.

Wupperman Campground, operated by Hinsdale County, offers 31 campsites on the eastern shore with fire pits, picnic tables, and clean vault toilets with soap and water provided. First-come, first-served sites fill fast during summer weekends. Lakefront cabin rentals are also available from private operators around the shore. A pedestrian bridge extends out from the shore, providing a signature viewpoint over the water toward the surrounding peaks.

The drive to Lake San Cristobal from Lake City takes just a few minutes south on County Road 30. The Alpine Loop Scenic Byway passes nearby, connecting to Engineer Pass and Cinnamon Pass for high-clearance adventurers. Fall color season in late September draws photographers and leaf-peepers from across the state. Wildlife watchers have spotted moose along the shoreline. Whether you are here for a weekend camping trip or a quick afternoon stop on a San Juan Mountains road trip, Lake San Cristobal ranks among the most beautiful and accessible alpine lakes in Colorado.
