About John Townsend Reservoir

John Townsend Reservoir is a roughly 9-acre fishing lake located on Fort Carson, the U.S. Army installation in southern El Paso County near Colorado Springs. It is one of the quietest and most productive small-water fisheries in the Pikes Peak region — if you can get through the gate. Access is controlled by the military, and understanding the permit requirements before you go will save you a wasted trip.

The reservoir holds a healthy mix of rainbow trout, largemouth bass, black crappie, channel catfish, and bluegill. Anglers who fish here regularly report fast action, especially for catfish and panfish in warmer months and trout through the cooler seasons. Multiple reviewers mention catching limits quickly, and larger channel catfish provide a genuine fight on light tackle. The variety of species makes this a productive spot whether you prefer bait fishing from the bank or casting lures for bass.

Access runs through the Fort Carson iSportsman system. You must create an account at fortcarson.isportsman.net, complete the online Fishing and Camping Safety Briefing, and purchase either an annual or one-day recreation permit before arriving. A valid Colorado fishing license is also required. Active-duty Fort Carson soldiers can fish during lunch hours (Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.) without a recreation permit or state license, though military ID must be carried. Gate hours are Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and the reservoir is closed to public access on weekends — a detail that catches many first-time visitors off guard.

Only electric-motor or hand-powered boats are allowed on the water. Kayaks, float tubes, and paddleboards are permitted, but every person on the water must wear a Coast Guard-approved life preserver. Night fishing is authorized at Townsend Reservoir, which opens up solid catfish opportunities after dark during summer.

Amenities are basic but functional. The reservoir has a boat launch, a small parking area, and a pavilion for shade. There are no flush restrooms or concessions on site. Visitors should bring everything they need, including water, and watch for rattlesnakes along the shoreline — several anglers mention snake sightings in warmer weather. Despite the access hoops, regulars call this their favorite local fishing spot for its low pressure, consistent stocking, and peaceful setting away from the busy public lakes around Colorado Springs.

Always bring my girls fishing here. We all catch our limit pretty quick. Got some decent size catfish in there too.

Quiet location, decent fishing although trout I caught were smaller than hoped. I'll try for catfish next time.
