About South Suburban Reservoir

South Suburban Reservoir sits within Stratton Open Space on the southwest side of Colorado Springs, offering one of the best urban trail loops in El Paso County. If you are looking for a scenic hike with views of Pikes Peak and a popular spot to let your dog splash around, this reservoir and the trails surrounding it deliver a surprisingly wild experience just minutes from the Broadmoor neighborhood.

Perched at roughly 6,400 feet of elevation, South Suburban Reservoir is one of two water-supply reservoirs managed by Colorado Springs Utilities inside Stratton Open Space. The South Suburban Reservoir Loop covers about 2.4 miles with around 280 feet of elevation gain, making it a moderate hike suitable for families, trail runners, and dog owners. The loop connects to a broader network of trails in Stratton Open Space, including the Chamberlain Trail, which extends the route with views of both South Suburban and Gold Camp Reservoirs.

This is primarily a hiking and dog-walking destination. The reservoir has become well known as a dog-friendly swimming spot where dogs can wade and swim along a designated shoreline area. Dogs must remain on leash while on the trails, though the water access area allows off-leash play. Human swimming, wading, and fishing are not permitted because the reservoir serves as part of the municipal water supply.

The trail system features a mix of packed-dirt paths, rocky sections, and some paved connectors. Wildflowers bloom across the meadows in late spring, and ponderosa pines provide welcome shade along portions of the loop. The open terrain offers sweeping views of the Front Range and Cheyenne Mountain, especially from the upper sections of the trail.

Stratton Open Space provides a small parking lot at the main trailhead with no fee required. The area gets busy on weekends and warm-weather afternoons, so morning visits offer the quietest experience. No restroom facilities are located directly at the reservoir, though the open space does have limited amenities near the trailhead.

South Suburban Reservoir is an ideal destination for Colorado Springs residents and visitors who want a quick, rewarding hike with mountain views and a welcoming spot for four-legged companions to cool off.

It was a nice walk on one of the first warm days of the year. Just sad to see so many people inside the closed gates with dogs swimming in the water..made me not want to come back to such a beautiful spot.

at this lake you are not allowed to swim or fish. you can only walk around it from a distance and you can't go near it because it is blocked off by a fence. good for a long hike tho. just to let other people know. YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO FISH AND THERE ARE NO FISH IN THERE ANYWAY. I made the same mistake.

Great place to take the dogs or go for a hike. Beautiful area, and while it is busy, everyone is friendly.

Shrines that validate suicide above the reservoir. Park is great otherwise.
