About Quail Lake

Quail Lake is a small urban lake in southwest Colorado Springs, right off Highway 115, with direct views of Cheyenne Mountain and the Front Range. It draws a loyal crowd of paddleboarders, kayakers, anglers, and families looking for a quick outdoor fix without driving into the mountains. The lake sits within a city park that includes a playground, picnic tables, shaded grassy areas, and a dirt trail that loops the entire shoreline.

Fishing is the most popular activity at Quail Lake, with the city stocking rainbow trout annually. Anglers also pull bluegill, catfish, and bass from the water. Two fishing piers on the south side offer accessible spots for kids and wheelchair users. Shore fishing is productive early in the morning or after dark, and night fishing is common here. Floating bait with garlic scent and brightly colored spinners work well after a fresh stock. Fly fishing can be effective right after trout plants. Be aware that the piers and shoreline get very crowded on weekends, often shoulder to shoulder by mid-morning.

Paddleboarding and kayaking dominate the water on warm days. A single boat ramp on the east side serves as the main launch point, and a second access area sits near the west parking lot. A non-motorized boat permit is required at five dollars per day or fifty dollars for a season pass, payable by cash in an envelope box near the brown post at the ramp. Paddleboard groups frequently operate organized sessions along the shore, which can create friction with bank anglers. Motorized boats are not allowed.

The dirt walking trail circling the lake is popular for walking, running, and dog walking. Dogs are welcome but must stay on leash per city rules. Bird watching is rewarding here, with great blue herons and cranes regularly spotted along the shore. The park also serves as a convenient spot for picnicking, with shaded areas under mature trees, though the picnic benches are in rough shape. Bringing a blanket for a grass picnic is a better bet.

Parking is the biggest challenge at Quail Lake. Two lots serve the east and west sides, but both fill quickly on weekends and holidays. Arriving before 7 AM is the safest strategy for securing a spot. Portable restrooms are available in both lots but are not always well maintained. Litter and abandoned fishing line are ongoing problems, so watch your step near the shore. Ice fishing draws a smaller but dedicated crowd in winter, with rainbow trout being the main catch through the ice.

The lake is very conveniently located, but its cleanliness leaves much to be desired. Along the shore, there is trash — bottles, paper, and even fishing hooks. Is it really so difficult to clean up after yourself?

Busy on the weekends, the water is gross but the area is so beautiful.

Quail lake is super dog friendly! A fun place to bring the family to paddleboard. I love how quiet it is and it feels you are not in the city anymore. My dog @itsnugnug loves to swim and paddleboard out here. We enjoyed every part of our trip here!

It is fun to go out in the mornings and fish when there is less people, the fishing is decent I caught some surprisingly big fish for the lakes size. It just gets so busy, and when I was there last was super muddy. Other than that I had a good experience

Poor infrastructure and parking, overcrowded on weekend, people listen to loud music without any concern to anyone around.
