About Bowl of Tears

Bowl of Tears is a striking 19-acre alpine lake at 12,008 feet in Eagle County, formed by snowmelt cascading off Mount of the Holy Cross in the Sawatch Range. The name alone draws curiosity, but the lake delivers on spectacle: a deep sapphire-blue pool cradled in a rocky cirque high above treeline, with the iconic cross-shaped snowfield of Holy Cross visible on the peak above.

Reaching Bowl of Tears requires commitment. The approach begins near Minturn, about 8.6 miles from town, following a class 1 trail through forest before transitioning to off-trail hiking up toward the base of a couloir. The terrain above treeline is rocky, exposed, and steep in sections, making this a full-day adventure suited to experienced hikers comfortable with route-finding and alpine conditions.

The lake itself is a destination for the scenery rather than the fishing. While some anglers have reported occasional catches, the general consensus is that Bowl of Tears holds few if any fish, likely due to the mineral content and harsh conditions at this elevation. Come for the views, the photography, and the challenge of the hike rather than expecting to land dinner.

Bowl of Tears sits within the Holy Cross Wilderness, one of Colorado's most celebrated alpine areas. The surrounding terrain offers opportunities for peak-bagging, backcountry exploration, and photographing one of the state's most recognizable fourteeners. Wildlife sightings above treeline can include marmots, pikas, and mountain goats.

The hiking season runs from roughly late June through September, depending on snowpack. Early-season visits may encounter snow on the approach and around the lake basin. Afternoon thunderstorms are a serious concern at this elevation, so start early and plan to be below treeline by noon. Bring layers, sun protection, and plenty of water. There are no facilities at the lake or along the upper trail. Bowl of Tears rewards those willing to earn every foot of elevation with one of the most dramatic alpine lake settings in Colorado.

One of my friends lives a couple of miles away from the lake. Every time hes sad, he drives to the lake and cries in it.

The plan was to row a boat out to the middle of the lake and make our Thomas cry into a bowl, before floating the bowl on the lake: a bowl of tears on 'Bowl of Tears', if you will. Sadly, due to us refusing Thomas' request to open the window for fresh air during the long drive there, he was all out of tears by then. Planning the same trip next year though.
