About Piney Lake

Piney Lake is a pristine alpine lake tucked into the back mountains behind Vail at roughly 9,300 feet elevation, framed by the dramatic peaks of the Gore Range. Reaching this lake requires a 40-to-45-minute drive on a bumpy dirt road from Vail, and while a 4WD vehicle is recommended, determined drivers have made it in standard cars. The payoff is one of the most photogenic lake settings in Eagle County.

Paddling on Piney Lake is the star attraction here. Canoe rentals run about $30 per hour, and paddleboard and pedal boat rentals are also available through the Piney River Ranch at the lakeside. The lake is compact enough to paddle around in an hour or two, but the surrounding views of snow-capped peaks reflected in the water make every minute on the surface feel worth it. Fishing is available for those who bring their own gear, and the calm alpine water makes for a relaxing cast. Moose are regularly spotted feeding in and around the lake, which adds a genuine wildlife encounter that few Colorado lakes can match.

The Piney River Ranch operates a restaurant, gift shop, and rental cabins right at the lake, making it possible to turn the visit into a full day or overnight trip. A moderate hiking trail leads from the lake to the Upper Piney River Falls, passing through meadows with creeks and offering views of the Gore Range along the way. The hike to the waterfalls takes approximately three hours round trip. Visitors should note that the ranch gate closes before dusk, so plan arrival and departure accordingly. The area closes at 6 PM.

Piney Lake draws significant crowds during peak summer months, and parking can be tight. Arriving early helps secure a spot. Picnic areas are limited, with some visitors wishing for more tables around the lakeshore. Despite the commercialized feel around the ranch area, the trail beyond remains relatively low-trafficked. For families, the combination of easy paddling, a short hike, on-site dining, and wildlife viewing makes Piney Lake one of the most accessible alpine lake experiences near Vail.

Got a 4x4 vehicle or one that can take a 4 mile rough ride? If so make sure when u go to vail to spend a day at piney lake. It's tucked away in the back mountains of vail. Just incredible... bring a fishing pole if you like to fish

Way too many people going up to the ranch. The lake isn’t very memorable and I definitely would not drive up there just for the lake. The surrounding area and trails are pretty but the crowds going up to the ranch ruin the experience. The road to get there is atrocious but I have seen a Ford Focus drive the road like it was a rally race so I guess any car can make it. Lots of yellow jackets and other stingers all over the area.

There is now a ranch/resort blocking the lake. It's gate closes before dusk. No chance to see moose anymore... very different than years past.

Beautiful day! Not the biggest lake to paddle around but the views make up for it!
