About Missouri Lakes

Missouri Lakes sit in a stunning alpine basin at 11,500 feet inside the Holy Cross Wilderness, just south of Minturn in Eagle County. If you have been searching for a Colorado high-country destination that delivers turquoise water, wildflower meadows, and genuine backcountry solitude, this chain of three lakes beneath Missouri Pass checks every box.

The Missouri Lakes Trail (#2003) begins at the Missouri Creek Trailhead off Homestake Road and climbs steadily for roughly 3.5 miles through dense spruce-fir forest before breaking into open alpine tundra. Most hikers report the round trip at 7 to 8.5 miles with moderate to strenuous effort, depending on pace and how many lakes you visit. The trail gains around 2,000 feet of elevation, so bring layers and start early to dodge afternoon thunderstorms that roll through the Sawatch Range in summer.

Fly fishing is a highlight here. The upper lake holds native cutthroat trout, while the lower lakes are stocked with brook trout. Anglers who hiked in during the late 1970s still call the fishery pristine, and recent visitors confirm healthy catch-and-release action on dry flies and small nymphs. A valid Colorado fishing license is required.

Backpackers love the Missouri Pass to Fancy Pass loop, which links Missouri Lakes with Fancy Lake and Treasure Vault Lake in a 12-mile circuit through some of the most dramatic alpine scenery in the state. Dispersed camping is allowed, though campfires are banned throughout the Missouri Creek and Fancy Creek basins to protect the fragile tundra. Self-registration wilderness permits are free at the trailhead.

Wildlife sightings include marmots, pikas, mountain goats, and the occasional moose near the lower trailhead. Wildflower season peaks in late July and early August, carpeting the meadows in columbine, Indian paintbrush, and alpine sunflowers. Parking at the trailhead fills by mid-morning on summer weekends, so arrive before 8 a.m. or plan a weekday trip. One practical tip from experienced visitors: spray peppermint oil around your vehicle if you are leaving it overnight, because rodents at the trailhead have been known to chew through engine wiring.

Definitely worth the effort to have lunch or swim up here, beautiful!

The hardest part is having to leave. It is beautiful up there. The hike up to via Missouri Lakes trail was harder than the hike up via Fancy Lake/Fancy Pass. Make sure to check your vehicle if you are backpacking or camping and leaving it parked in the same place for a prolonged period of time. A mouse or some kind of a weird looking woodrat, not a chipmunk or pica, totally gnawed up my car’s engine, and had a party in the exhaust system all night long. Seriously, forget bears, mountain lions or moose, spray your car with some peppermint oil solution to discourage the crazy rodents from wreaking havoc on your vehicle.

Stunning. Do the loop and go thrpugh the pass to come down and sew Fancy after. Easy to make a side trio to the old city as well

Hard loop trail with snow in pass at end of June continuing to Fancy Lake, but beautiful. Rough, sudden weather changes with sleet, rain, and wind... it's mountains, be prepared.

It's a wonderful hike. Good fishing at the big lake. We jumped in after a long day of hiking - it was certainly refreshing!

Stunning August hike. From the trailhead to the top (third) lake and back is closer to 8.5 miles so prepare for the distance and weather although the route isn't difficult. This is one of CO's most spectacular hikes with the views, wildflowers varied terrain. Highly recommended.
