About Lake Isabel

Lake Isabel is a scenic mountain reservoir tucked into the Wet Mountains of Custer County near the small community of Rye, Colorado. Nestled at the base of Greenhorn Mountain, this CCC-era dam and reservoir draws families, anglers, and hikers who want a peaceful alpine setting without a long backcountry trek. Reviewers consistently describe the lake as one of their favorite places in Colorado, praising its calm water, stunning mountain backdrops, and the brilliant fall color display when aspens turn gold in early October.

Fishing at Lake Isabel is the primary draw for most visitors. The lake is stocked with rainbow trout and lake trout, and reviewers report consistent catches, especially for families with children. Kids regularly catch multiple fish per outing, making this an excellent destination for introducing young anglers to the sport. Ice fishing is also popular during winter months, with visitors reporting good conditions on the frozen surface. Anglers can fish from shore or rent small aluminum rowboats available on-site for accessing deeper water.

A walking trail loops around at least half of the lake, providing a moderate hike with views of the water and surrounding peaks. The trail is wide enough for comfortable walking, though some sections can be muddy after rain, and portions of the bridge infrastructure over the creek have been reported in disrepair. The loop trail is suitable for a short family outing, and birding opportunities along the route add interest for wildlife enthusiasts.

Lake Isabel charges a vehicle entry fee that has ranged from eight to fifteen dollars per car depending on the season and year. Visitors with a Rocky Mountain Park Conservancy pass can enter without the day-use fee. The fee area includes a large parking lot on the north side, though parking can fill up during peak weekends. The downhill walk from the lot to the water is short but worth noting for visitors with mobility concerns, as the area lacks wheelchair-accessible ramps.

Facilities at Lake Isabel include restrooms, picnic areas with grilling stations located near the creek, and rustic cabins available for overnight stays. A small on-site store and restaurant offer basic supplies and meals. RV camping spots are available, with some sites positioned close to the water. The surrounding area offers additional attractions including nearby Bishop Castle, making Lake Isabel a strong base for a multi-day Wet Mountains getaway.

Visitors should bring lawn chairs, food, and sun protection because shade is limited in some shoreline areas. The lake tends to be less crowded on weekday visits and during shoulder seasons. Litter has been a recurring concern noted in reviews, so packing out all trash helps preserve the experience for future visitors. The drive to Lake Isabel passes through beautiful mountain scenery, and many reviewers note the journey itself is part of the appeal.

Love this place. Growing up as a kid our family would go to Lake Isabella, and we spent about a week. Seeing all the sites rafting going up to Bishop Castle. Fast-forward 25 years later, I wanted to share that experience with the kids and all the beautiful views that Colorado provides.

This is one of my favorite places to go fishing, it is beautiful, quiet and very clean, on top of that, you can make a rich roast beef by listening to the river water.

Parking limited, downhill walk to water, limited space along shore for fishing or sitting. Daily fee necessary. Great little lake, very calm, nice view, good for families

Not well maintained. Trails/walkways around the lake are sketchy and full of muddy puddles. Bridge over creek has broken parts all over it Someone's going to break through and get hurt. It has really gone down hill, especially when charging $10 each car for parking.

A nice, smaller, pristine lake for fishing trouts. There are some picnic/grilling areas by the creek as well. At the time we went, the entrance fee was $10 and the park rangers were friendly.

Beautiful surroundings great fishing for Lake and rainbow trout. Cool restaurant, small store and rustic cabins as well as small aluminum row boat rentals. Also great RV parking spots, some close to the water some not so close. Well worth the drive and stay 👍
