About Horseshoe Lake

Horseshoe Lake sits high in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of Custer County, a backcountry alpine destination reached by a rugged 4WD road above Westcliffe, Colorado. The drive up Hermit Pass tests both vehicle and driver with long stretches of rocky, uneven terrain, but the payoff is a pristine mountain lake framed by some of the most dramatic peaks in the state. Visitors who make the trek consistently describe the scenery as stunning and the solitude as a welcome contrast to Colorado's more heavily trafficked mountain areas.

The lake sits at the upper end of a network of dispersed camping spots scattered along the approach road. Many travelers combine a visit to Horseshoe Lake with an overnight stay, setting up camp among the pines and aspens that line the route. There are no developed campgrounds or formal amenities at the lake itself, so plan to be self-sufficient. Pack out all trash and bring your own water, as services are nonexistent at this elevation.

Fishing draws anglers willing to earn their casts through the challenging drive. The clear alpine water and remote setting provide a quiet alternative to the crowded tailwaters and reservoirs closer to the Front Range. Fly fishing is possible along the shoreline, though the lake's compact size keeps things intimate. Hiking opportunities extend beyond the lake, with trails and old mining roads branching into the surrounding high country.

If you plan to drive up, a high-clearance 4WD vehicle is not optional. Reviewers recommend lowering tire pressure before the ascent to absorb the constant jarring from rocks and ruts. A full-size SUV can handle it, but expect a slow, deliberate pace. The road condition alone filters out casual visitors, which is part of the appeal for those who prefer wild, uncrowded landscapes.

Horseshoe Lake is roughly an hour's drive from Colorado Springs, making it a surprisingly accessible weekend escape despite its remote feel. The Westcliffe area offers basic supplies and fuel, so stock up before heading into the mountains. Late summer through early fall is the prime window, when the road is most passable and wildflowers dot the alpine meadows. For anyone seeking a genuine backcountry lake experience without a long backpacking approach, Horseshoe Lake delivers.

You need 4X4 to get there, it is very bumpy, reduce air pressure in tires to help. Beautiful place, worth the bumpy drive.

Drove up to horseshoe lake on a camping trip just outside of westcliffe Colorado this summer. The sangre de Cristo mountain range is absolutely gorgeous. The area is pristine and not nearly as crowded as other parts of the state. Surprisingly it is just a little over an hours drive from the springs. We'll definitely go back and explore the area again next summer.

The road getting up here is long and rough but well worth it! Wonderful views and lots of good camping areas. Definitely a four-wheel drive road.
