About Lake Meredith

Lake Meredith is the largest body of water in Crowley County, Colorado, spreading across more than 5,500 surface acres of open plains south of Ordway and Sugar City. If you want a warm-water lake where you can camp right at the shoreline, launch a boat without fighting for ramp space, and fish for walleye and channel catfish on the eastern Colorado prairie, Lake Meredith delivers an experience that feels worlds apart from the crowded Front Range reservoirs.

The reservoir sits at a low elevation on the high plains, which means the water gets surprisingly warm during summer months. With an average depth of around six feet, the shallow profile heats up fast and stays comfortable for swimming, tubing, and wading well into September. Boating is a major draw here. Two boat ramps on the north shore handle everything from bass boats to jet skis, and the Lake Meredith Marina offers pontoon and jet ski rentals along with fuel. There is plenty of room for waterskiing, tubing, jet skiing, sailing, and windsurfing across the wide-open surface.

Fishing at Lake Meredith targets a solid mix of warm-water species. Walleye, saugeye, channel catfish, wiper, tiger muskie, largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie all swim these waters. Catfish action picks up in the warmer months when bank anglers set up along the north shore with cut bait and chicken liver. Walleye and saugeye fishing is best during spring and fall, particularly around the deeper channels near the dam. Ice fishing is permitted during winter when conditions allow.

Free primitive camping is available on the north shore on a first-come, first-served basis. Sites sit right along the waterline with no reservation required. The camping area is basic — there is virtually no shade, vault toilets are the only facilities, and wind can be relentless on the open plains. Visitors with RVs and campers generally fare better than tent campers, especially when afternoon gusts kick up. Despite the spartan setup, the ability to camp directly on the water with no fees keeps people coming back.

The reservoir is open from late February through early November for most activities, with birdwatching and hunting access available during that window. The south and southwest portions of the lake attract notable wildlife, including shorebirds and migrating waterfowl. Be aware that a large feedlot operates upwind to the north, and when the wind shifts direction, the smell can reach the lake. Bringing your own shade structure, firewood, and supplies is essential — there is no concession stand or store nearby.

Lake Meredith is a raw, unpolished destination that rewards self-sufficient visitors. The wide-open water, free camping, warm swimming temperatures, and diverse fishery make it a worthwhile road trip from Colorado Springs, Pueblo, or anywhere along the Front Range for anglers, boaters, and campers who do not mind roughing it on the prairie.

This was a great day trip. Long Sunday drive from the Springs, little sunflowers most of the way on both sides of the road. Dog had a great swim. Caught some sunshine before winter. No cow smell around the lake, today anyway. Pretty good 👍

The camping area needs to be cleaned up-it looks like a homeless encampment.

Poor signage, poor roads leading to, the worse restroom I have EVER encountered, lots of trash left by people, no picnic area, smells, billions of flies.... that about covers it.
