About Lake Henry

Lake Henry is a free-access lake on the eastern plains of Colorado in Crowley County, roughly halfway between Pueblo and La Junta. It is one of the last remaining free lakes in the state, with no entry fees for fishing, swimming, or camping, which makes it a popular destination for families and budget-conscious outdoor enthusiasts across southeastern Colorado. The lake sits in open, treeless prairie, giving it a remote, wide-open feel with big skies and impressive stargazing after dark.

Fishing is the core activity at Lake Henry, and anglers report catching small catfish along with other warm-water species. The east side of the lake is a local favorite for casting a line. Results vary by visit, but regulars consider it some of the best free fishing in the area. Swimming is also common here, and the lake bottom is less mucky than many plains reservoirs, which visitors appreciate for wading and splashing with kids. The water can develop an odor when lake levels drop, particularly during drought or late summer, so checking conditions before a trip is worth the effort.

Free camping is available around the lake, though sites are primitive with no developed amenities. There are no public restrooms, no shade trees, and no picnic tables. Visitors need to bring everything they need, including sun protection, water, and all supplies. The open prairie means wind can be strong and persistent, making tent camping challenging on gusty days. RV camping is possible, but flies and livestock odors from nearby ranch land can be an issue. Fly traps are highly recommended. Free-range bulls have been spotted roaming the area, so staying alert around vehicles and camp setups is important.

Despite the lack of facilities, Lake Henry has a loyal local following. Families come for free weekend outings, horseback riders circle the lake on the surrounding trails, and the quiet, uncrowded atmosphere is a major draw for those who prefer solitude over developed recreation areas. Night skies are outstanding, with minimal light pollution making stars and the Milky Way highly visible. The lake does suffer from litter, and multiple visitors note ongoing trash problems, so packing out all garbage is essential to keeping this free resource usable. Lake levels fluctuate with seasonal conditions, and the water can be quite shallow during dry periods.

Love that its not crowded. Did catch a fish. The water stinks. Lake is really low so maybe that's why it smells.

It was a nice peaceful lake went during the week so there wasn't to many people. Not to many places to camp if it was more busy. The stars were beautiful at night. Definitely recommend some sort of fly trap when going. It gets very windy, the stars are beautiful at night 7/10

It was beautiful but would have been way too windy to set up a tent.
